No Concert Here Tonight

Washington Street is quiet tonight.
The crowds have dissipated, since
The ruling over off Clark Street.
St. Louis looks like a ghost town.
The 'agitators' are elsewhere:
That's where the police are now.

Leclede's Landing is quiet tonight,
The intersecting cobblestone streets
And the brick and cast iron buildings
Are deserted as the Mississippi drifts by.
Another verdict is in and it's the same
As the one before and the one's before that.

Martin Luther King Bridge is quiet tonight,
Its name sake struck the match
That shone light on America sublime;
Its painted surface, revealing scars beneath.
— A dark and ugly presence drains
The unrequited greatness from this land.

No concert here, only quiet tonight.
No concert anywhere in this land.
U2 remains in their hotel rooms while
The ghost of Anthony Lamar Smith
Creeps along and haunts the streets,
Darker now than yesterday, and
St. Louis cry's the blues while
Others shift uneasily
In their comfortable living room chairs.
