A shot in the arm

A shot in the arm?
Sure I'll take
a shot in the arm.
A shot in the arm
can mean a lot,
and usually it means
an encouraging blow
like 'break a leg'
up on the stage.
But it could be
quite a different thing;
it could mean
a needle perhaps,
perhaps inoculation.
But last night it didn't;
it didn't mean
a needle in the arm,
it didn't mean
an encouraging blow.
Last night,
I learned today,
it means a bullet —
a bullet in the arm.
A student that
my wife teaches,
has an uncle who
was shot in the arm.
Yes, last night in Las Vegas
at Route 91.
