I was beyond pissed off when I went home. I considered looking her name up in the school directory and dropping by her house, but then I decided not to. She already thought that I was a stalker, this wouldn't help.
When I got home, I could hear my parents talking civilized for once. They were divorced, but my mom still continued to hang around here, much to my dad's displease.
I went to the kitchen to get myself a sandwich.
"Hey, honey," I heard my mom say.
I tried to forget about my Chemistry partner and put on a smile.
"Hey, mom," I said.
"How was your day?" she asked.
"Good," I said.
"I'm going to head out," she said.
"Okay," I said. "See you later."
"Oh, and tell your father that he's a bastard," she said nonchalantly.
I frowned.
"Yeah," I said. "Sure."
I shook my head as the door slammed shut.
"Was that your mother? She is such a-" my father started, coming into the kitchen.
"Save it, Dad," I said, carrying my dinner upstairs to my room.
I tried turning on the television but it wasn't working to distract me.
I grabbed my cell phone again, fed up with avoiding it. I scrolled through dialed numbers until I found hers.
It rang twice before she answered.
"Hello?" she asked. She seemed impatient and irritated.
"You blew me off," I said.
"Dominic?" she asked. I took a breath. She already thought I was a jerk. I might as well not make it worse.
"Yeah," I said.
"Max, stop," she said, obviously not talking to me anymore.
Max? Boyfriend, maybe?
"You blew me off to be with your boyfriend?" I asked.
"More like I forgot while I was working double time," she said.
"Oh," I said.
"And Max isn't my boyfriend," she said.
"Who is he?" I asked, intrigued.
"You don't need to know," she said, defensive. It had been a long day. I was running out of patience.
"Tomorrow, my house," I said. "After school."
"Bu-" she started.
"After work, then," I said. "Figure it out."
I knew I probably just totally ruined any chance that I had to get to know her, but I was pissed off.

After I hung up, I went back to Max.
"Bedtime," I said. "Now."
"But it's only-"
"Max," I said, my voice stern. "Now."
"What happened, Ree?" he asked, his large, innocent eyes peering up at me with concern.
"Nothing," I said, taking a deep breath. "Just a boy from school."
"Are you in love with someone like I am? Like Julia Burnsteins?" he asked.
