"A little to the right."

I shifted the pride flag, glancing over at Nash's squinting eyes.

"Like that?" I asked.

He tossed up an 'okay' sign. "Perfect."

I tacked up the flag's right side, and he did the left. I'd chosen to hang it above my bed where I could look up and see it anytime.

"Took you long enough," Nash said, climbing down from my bed. "I almost hung it up myself a while back."

I chuckled, following his lead back to the ground. "No, you're right. It's about time. Thanks for helping."

"Of course."

We both lifted our heads to admire our handiwork. The vibrant rainbow stripes caught the golden sunlight, and I couldn't have chosen a better position for it.

Nash slid on his jacket and picked up his backpack. "Alright, I'm gonna head to class."

"Me too, but I'm gonna check on Lucas first."

"Right. Text me an update." He waved his phone in the air, then he was out the door.

I didn't pay a single ounce of attention in my Political Science class. How could I?

It was Friday, one step closer to the day of reckoning. In my mind, I replayed David being wheeled into surgery and the anesthesiologist putting him into a sleep he may never wake up from. One wrong calculation, one wrong move, a cough, a sneeze, a twitch, and it would all be over.

My phone buzzed as I was lost in my morbid thoughts. Core classes like this were usually large, and thank God for it. Having sat so far in the back, I was able to take out my phone without feeling like I'd get caught. Plus, it was college. Teachers weren't going around confiscating phones.

I opened the message from David.

Hi, love. Hope I'm not disturbing. Will you come over after your classes?

I smiled, texting him back: I'd love to.

Ok good. I'll pay for your uber.

No, I can take the bus most of the way.

I wont let you. You should be comfortable in a car.

Knowing this was a debate I wouldn't win, I obliged.

Fine. Uber it is.

I miss you. And it's only been a day.

I know. I was hoping I could spend the weekend.

Yes please. All I want is to hold you and kiss you.

I imagined David's lips on mine, how it felt like a blessed miracle each time he did kiss me. I must have sat there with a silly, lovestruck smile on my face, melting at the idea of him holding me.
