The class all filed out, and I stayed sat down, frozen. This wasn’t happening. I wasn’t… I had picked Maths for a reason. I was good at it. An easy A. I wasn’t meant to get a U. A B? Maybe. But a U? Never.

“You should’ve let me take the blame,” Harry whispered, and I shook my head.

I opened my mouth to reply, but nothing came out. I was panicking over a grade. But it wasn’t just a grade.

“Are you--”

“You two! Up, now.”

I glanced at Harry, before getting up and rushing over to her desk. I wanted to speak -- to apologise. But, nothing came out. I feared if I did open my mouth, nothing but quivering words would spill out.

“Miss, I’m sorry, but her sheet did not deserve to be ripped up,” Harry spoke, but she shushed him.

“Miss Edwards. I realise this is your first U.”

I nodded, scratching my forehead as I watched her type something up on her computer. “Mr Styles, I can’t say the same for you.”

I glanced at Harry, raising my eyebrows.

“I may have, erm, missed a few exams, yeah.”

Of course. “Well, here’s the thing. It would be completely dumb to kick Brenna out of my class, due to this being her first offence. I can’t say the same for you.”

I stared at her. “What are you saying?” I asked, finally finding my voice.

“My classroom is full. I have way too many students, it’s well above the legal limit. I need to get rid of one, and I don’t plan of getting rid of you.”

“That’s fine--” Harry began, but I cut him off.

“No. I’d rather you let me drop this class.”

Both of them turned to stare at me.

“What, why?” She asked, and I shrugged.

“I’d like to take up photography.”

Harry relaxed, and a hint of a smile met his lips.

Our professor wasn’t so content. “I don’t understand why you’d do that?”

“Because I have realised my future career doesn’t involve maths.”

“Are you positive? It’s a subject you’re extremely talented in.”

“I know. I’m also talented in photography.”

“Really? Have you thought this through?”

“Yes,” I lied.

She sighed, nodding in resignation. “Alright. You will need to go down to the administrator’s office to go change.”

“Okay, thank you miss. Will this go down in my record?”

“The ‘U’? Yes. But, it won’t be major, as you’re a first offender.”

“Okay, thanks so much.”

“You two can go now. Mr Styles, I’ll see you next lesson. Miss Edwards, it was a pleasure teaching you. You will be missed.”

She was making it sound as if we’d never see each other again. I nodded and shot her a grateful smile, before rushing out of the door. Harry followed me.

“Hey, changing subjects are we?” He questioned, and I nodded.

“I mean, I don’t need the maths.”
