    REWRITTEN

   Jay's POV

I stop running, my legs aching as my body is losing energy at a fast pace. My thoughts run at a thousand miles per hour, different scenarios playing though my mind. I slump against a dead tree stump, my lungs feeling confined.

I hear footsteps clap against the forest floor, leaves being kicked around. They're coming quickly and I don't move, at this point I don't care if they find me. He's probably gone, just like Brett...this is my fault. None of this would be happening right now if it weren't for me.

"Jay! Where are you!" My eyes shoot open, a sudden excitement and euphoria taking over me.

   It's him, he's alive!

"Keith, o-over here!" I pant, my voice giving out due to the dryness.

He runs to where my voice came from, coming around the corner and revealing himself. He's pale and panting hard, sweat brimming  his forehead.

"Thank goodness you're okay!" he breaths, dropping and taking me into his arms. I sigh in relief, feeling a wave of emotion shower me. I feel safe again.

He pulls away and captures my lips with his, pecking me. The same tingling feeling taking over my body as he pulls me impossibly  closer to him.

  I pull away, breathing heavily.

"W-we need to find a road, or someone," I say, leaning my forehead against his, staring deeply into his eyes. He nods, standing up and taking me with him. I lose my balance, stumbling a little.

"Woah, are you okay?"

I gulp down the whimper, "yeah, I'm fine. We have to go, before the sun sets," I say walking forward, holding onto the bark of trees for support.

We move on, not turning back, going deeper into the unknown.

***

The sun beats down on our backs, sweat dripping from my brows, my body shaking from energy loss; my stomach growling for food.

We take a break, coming up and staring over a small cliff, nothing but more trees growing below.

  "Anything?"

I shake my head, "well then, lets keep moving. It's getting late and we're loosing daylight."

I stride slowly to Keith, bolts of pain shooting up my leg every time I step forward. The sun is now descending, rays of light blinding us as we stride on, determined to find someone, anyone to help us. Keith now in front, pants and stumbles, growing weak with every passing second.

I come to a stop, something echoes in the distance, distracting me. I take a detour and pace to where the sound is coming from, staring out. Lights glow, metal shinning in the rays of light, a city alive and bustling. Car horns echo through the air and I feel relief.

   We found it.

"What is it, Jay?" He comes up beside me, questioning why I stopped. I point ahead and his gaze follows my finger, landing on the beautiful city in front.

"We found it," I breathe, and laugh, "we found it!"

Keith wraps an arm around my shoulder, chuckling, then laughing with me.

"We're saved," he exclaims.

"Come on, we don't have much time," I lead him forward, down the hill, closer to freedom from this forest.

Were so close.

So close.
