(Devon Remington)
Wednesday April 13. Prom was going to happen on the 16th and we only had 30 days left in the whole school year.
Spring break was last week and per our tradition all Kendal, Kyle, and I did was hang out at the YMCA pool and did nothing. But that was last week. This week... well... it held a surprise.
"Dumbass! You dumbass!"
"How was I supposed to know about that?!"
"I told you about it last week!"
I closed my bedroom door.
"Do we really have to go to school today?"
"Yes, we do." Kendal said, "what's the matter?"
"You can hear my mom and Bennett's dad, right? They're screaming at each other."
"So?"
     "That's extremely awkward and irritating."
"At least you have parents to fight."
"Parent. I only have one parent now. Granted my mother should be happy with Bennett's dad, but I will not be happy with him."
     "Why?"
"Because he's Bennett's father... are you not listening to me?"
She walked over to my bedroom door, opened it, and then she shoved me out into the hallway.
     "Nope, not really."
I rolled my eyes and we walked downstairs then outside to my car.
"I guess we'll go to school."
*****
"Mr. Hanes, I have a proposal for you."
"And what is that?"
"Will you... I don't know... 'take me to prom'."
"Aren't I supposed to ask you?"
"Well, I've been waiting for it, and I'm growing impatient."
He laughed.
"Come by during second block."
I smiled and looked at him.
"Almost anything for you."
*****
"Well?" He asked.
"No, that's not cheesy nor romantic."
He signed.
"Well... how did Bennett ask you out to Prom last year?"
"Well, he took me out to the football field in the dark, and walked me up to the top of the bleachers to the press box. When we got up there he signaled for the limelights to be turned on. The field was lit-up like a Christmas tree and there, in a collection of every sport ball you can think of was arranged in words. And it said,
'I know I'm an ass, but will you go to prom with me?'
     Mr. Hanes looked at me.
"That's not cheesy or romantic either."
      "To me it was."
"I can do better than that."
"Prove it." I said, "I'll be back during lunch."
"Okay."
*****
"This better be good. Bennett..."
I walked in and was directed towards the board.
"Who are you?"
"A friend of Ray's... well, I use the word 'friend' lightly."
"Wait... you're..."
"Yes, I am."
It was Devon. Mr. Hanes's best friend from high school.
     "Why are you here?"
"Because he needs my help with something."
I looked around the room and nothing had changed. So, I was a little worried about what was happening.
"Okay..."
Mr. Hanes walked in with a poster board and some other things.
"Oh good grief." I said, "how cheesy are you going to be?"
"That's up to Devon. He's going to help me because he was always better at doing this than me."
"Okay, go for it."
"Oh, no, see this is going to take longer than lunch. Come back at the end of the day."
I crossed my arms.
"Just... fine."
"See you soon." He called after me.
"Yeah, whatever." I said walking out of the room.
*****
*****Mr. Hanes*****
"As a police officer I can sort of not condone this, but as a best friend... I'm good with it."
"She's going to hate it."
"Possibly, but not definitely."
"Thanks."
He patted me on the shoulder.
"Anything for you. Now, I'm going to go before she comes back up here. You do your thing."
"Alright, I will."
He left the room. A few minutes later she walked into the room, and I put the poster board behind me on the board.
"What did you do?"
"You're about to find out."
I stepped away and she scanned over it and I saw a smile spread across her face.
"Yes, I would love to."
"Alright then." I said smiling back at her, "come on."
We walked out of the building and outside to her car. Kendal was already there waiting on her.
"I'll see you tomorrow."
"Of course."
She got into the car and I watched her drive off with Kendal in the passenger seat. I walked back upstairs to my room and stood in front of the poster.
'Will you be the Daisy to my Gatsby? But promise you won't get me killed.'
"Why do I love this girl?"
