Backstory: Liv was raised by a single mother who was a perfectionist that did not accept anything other than 100%. She made Liv do a lot of the housework, starting at the age of four. They never grew close, but Liv's mother held her in a better light than she did Liv's sister. That's why, when Liv's mother came home drunk (which was nearly every night), she would yell at and punish Max, but only ever locked Liv in a closet. Throughout her childhood, Liv was only beat once, though being slapped is a different story since it happened often. One night, Liv's mother drove home drunk and was in a car crash. She died and her daughters were taken to the centre.

Backstory: Max would usually stay out all day, playing with her friends. Whenever she got home, she'd be dirty and often also muddy. Her mother despised her for this and yelled at her; if she was in a bad mood or if Max attempted to run away or fight back, her mother might even beat her. One night, Max's mother drove home drunk and was in a car crash. She died and her daughters were taken to the centre.
