Let's Put the Past Behind Us (Prequel to Forbidden Love)

Chapter 10

It was a Monday again and the end of term, it would be the first time going into school and facing my dad eventually since I moved out and into Kyle’s flat. Kyle’s mum had been dead nice to me while I was there and when I woke up and went into the kitchen she’d made me breakfast “Morning love” Jackie said as I sat down and she put the bacon sandwich in front of me “Thanks for letting me stay here, Jackie” I said before starting on the food “Nonsense, love, you’re like family now you’re with our Kyle” she said and walked away and into her own bedroom. After finishing my breakfast I went and had a shower and got dressed as Kyle woke up and went for a shower himself. When we were both ready, Jackie kissed Kyle and hugged me before we walked out and through his estate hand in hand. When we got in through the school gates, I saw my dad watching me and Kyle but I just ignored him and walked into the school with Kyle. I’d somehow managed to make Finn and Kyle make up again so we went over and stood with him and Josh before registration. As soon as the bell went, I walked away from my friends and went into registration, sitting down next to Denzil; it seemed like most people had forgotten about what had happened on Friday since nobody said anything. I was talking to Denzil about what we were doing in the holidays but shut up when the door opened and Budgen walked in…With Jez? I was about to say something to Denzil when my phone vibrated in my pocket and I pulled it out, I unlocked it quickly and opened up the text Miss me? It read, my eyes widened when I read who it was from. I looked up at Budgen then grabbed my bag and stood up “I’m here sir, I need to talk to my dad” I said to Mr Budgen then walked out the classroom and along the corridor. I walked down the stairs and knocked on Mr Clarkson’s door “Can I have a word with Tariq? It’s about some coursework he’s helping me with” I asked Tom, he looked at me and nodded “Tariq” he said, I watched as Tariq got up and came out, closing the door behind him. “Wayne’s awake” I said simply, Tariq looked at me and his eyes widened like mine had done, I pulled out my phone and showed him the text message I’d got off him “What-What if he comes here, Tariq? He-he might see me with Kyle and flip out at him” I said and started pacing a little, putting my hand through my hair. “I won’t let him touch you, I promise” Tariq said and pulled me into his chest, hugging me tight before we pulled away when the bell went for first period.

First period was music, I walked straight in and grabbed my guitar before sitting down next to Denzil and Scout, we’d only been in the room for about 5 minutes when Sian came to the door and asked to speak to Scout. After she’d left we started practising the piece of music that we’d been learning all of term for the prize giving that night, we’d spent an hour practising already when I saw Madi walked past the window, she turned around and waved me out. Looking at Mr Wilding I stopped playing and put my guitar down before walking out the room ignoring Mr Wilding. “Did you know?” Madi asked when I closed the door “What?” I asked confused “Did you know about Sian and your dad?” she asked and I could tell she was a little bit upset from her tone of voice “I-Yes I did. That’s why I’ve been so off with him for the last week and why I moved out” I told her and looked down at the floor “I-Why didn’t you tell me, Kaitlin?” she said through light sobs and I looked up again, her blonde wispy hair getting in her face “I was sworn to secrecy, I’m so sorry, Madi, I wanted to tell you so much, I’m sorry” I said and walked over to her, I looked at her then wrapped my arms round her and smiled when she let me hug her as she sobbed into my shoulder. “It’s okay” I tightened my arms a little “Kaitlin, can you come back inside now please?” I heard Mr Wilding say and I pulled away from Madi “I’m going to Ireland with my dad and Zack, I’ll stay in touch okay” Madi told me, I looked at her and nodded then hugged her again before walking back into my music room to finish the double lesson we had.

After Music had finished, I went out to break with Denzil and Phoenix then went to Maths and sat in front of the two boys. I couldn’t believe how quickly Maths went and basically shot out the classroom when the bell went. I walked over to Kyle and kissed him before dragging him outside, I saw Madi and Zack getting Jez’s car and rushed over “You’re going now?” I asked and Madi nodded, I looked at her and hugged her tight which she returned. “I’ll miss you” Madi whispered to me “I’ll miss you too” I said back and we stayed like that for about a minute or two before we pulled apart, both of us were crying. I watched her get into the car and then waved with Vicki as she drove away “Oh how did your resit go?” I asked Vicki as Kyle came over and I slipped my hand in his “I got a B” she said, I smiled and dropped Kyle’s hand, hugging her tight. When we pulled away I looked over at the gate and saw him. He had his hood up, he was looking down but I knew instantly who it was “I won’t be a minute” I said to Kyle and kissed him before entering the school the back way. I was walking through the corridor and was eventually stopped by Miss Radleigh “I thought I told you that those shoes weren’t appropriate for school, Kaitlin” she said and put her arm out so I couldn’t walk away “Look, miss, no offence but I really don’t care what you think, my dad has said that my converse are okay so I’ll listen to him over you” I said and pushed her arm out the way, I was about to walk through the door but it opened the other way and he looked at me. Wayne. I stood there frozen to the spot before he grabbed me and dragged me back “Miss!” I shouted, she looked back and watched Wayne pull me into a classroom and push me forwards, slamming the door shut. “What’re you doing here, Wayne?!” I shouted at him and back away “I saw you with him. You’re with Ashleigh’s dad ain’t ya? ‘e’s ya boyfriend” he shouted at me and I backed off again, hitting the wall. “Yes” I said quietly “Wayne just let me go, please” I pleaded but he shook his head and walked round the tables and over to me. “How could you do that to me, huh?! After everything that I did for you?!” He shouted in my face “What’re you doing here, Wayne?” I shouted back at him and he pressed his hands on my shoulders and pushed me against the wall. “I’m here to see your precious daddy” he said and a smirk played on his lips as he got closer to me “Get off me!” I shouted at him and tried to push him back but he was too strong. “We could have been great ya know, Kaitlin. Me and you leading the DSC, it’d of been great but you threw all that away when you cheated on Craig with that scum, Kyle. I don’t even understand why he got back with you after that, you’re a dirty slut” he spat in my face and pressed me back harder against the wall, he only looked away from me when the door opened and my dad, Sian and Linda ran in. “Kaitlin, are you okay?” was the first thing he said and I just nodded. “Wayne what’re you doing here?” my dad asked and went to walk forwards but Wayne stepped back towards me causing my dad to back up a little bit. “Come to save your precious slut of a daughter have you?” Wayne said through laughter, I looked at dad then at Sian before keeping my eyes on Wayne. “What do you want?” my dad asked and backed away a little bit more as Wayne went forwards “Same as you wanted from me, maybe the truth! An apology” Wayne shouted, I looked at my dad confused “I told you the truth” my dad said, “Hang on, an apology for what?” I piped up and Wayne turned to me “Oh so you didn’t tell your precious daughter what you did to one of her oldest friends?” Wayne spat at my dad “What’re you going on about?!” I asked frantically looking from Wayne to my dad “He’s the reason I got hit by a car, he chased me out the school and left me on the side of the road after I was knocked over” he shouted at me, pointing to my dad. I looked over at him then pursed my lips a little “Look at me! I ended up in intensive care because of you. If you got your way I’d be dead by now!” Wayne shouted at my dad, “Why didn’t you tell anyway, Byrne? Why didn’t you tell anyone about how you threatened me and attacked me and then pushed me in front of a van, huh? Why didn’t you tell anyone?!” Wayne shouted at my dad “I didn’t attack you or push you in front of a van, Kaitlin, I didn’t” my dad said, looking at me. “You did walk away, didn’t ya?” Wayne shouted, I looked at him then out the window, I froze when I saw Kyle walk past. He looked in at me and his eyes widened, I shook my head to stop him but he burst through the door. “Oh here he is, Kyle Stack, come to steal ya girlfriend away again?!” Wayne shouted at Kyle, I looked at Wayne then Kyle “Wayne Johnson. Back from the dead I see” Kyle said, he was about to run at Wayne but Sian grabbed him and took him outside. “Wayne you need to calm down” Linda suddenly said, Wayne turned to her and glared “Stay ou’ a’right” he spat at her, I watched Wayne as he went sort of rigid, he leant back against the desk and started breathing funny, my first instinct was to go over to him but I stayed put “Just tell the truth” Wayne said more calmly now “I panicked, I was scared, and yeah…I did leave ya there” my dad said quietly, I looked over at him then back at Wayne “Ant you already done me enough damage?” Wayne said and he suddenly collapsed, I looked at my dad then shook my head and ran over to him, going to my knees in front of him.  “Wayne, you need help” dad said and walked over to him “Don’t make out that you care, even this lot can see what you’re really like now” Wayne said, he sat up and leant against the leg of a table, I looked at him then at my dad before running my hand back through my hair. “Is that why you sent me the notes? Were they a way to expose me?” dad said as he knelt down in front of Wayne “What? What notes?” Wayne asked, obviously confused. “Come on, I’ve told you what I did. No secrets, this ends here” dad said calmly. “Aw and that’s ya job gone innit” Wayne said “I value my job but I value my piece of mind a lot more” my dad said, I leant back on the soles on my feet then looked at Wayne, he looked down then back at me, I smiled a little before he turned around again to my dad. “Which is why I want to say, in front of witnesses, that I’m sorry. I did the wrong thing. I was hard on you, I know that, but you know why? Because when I looked at you, I saw me at your age. The anger. The aggression.” my dad said and I smiled a tiny bit at his honesty. “Ya nothing like me” Wayne said and I could hear the pain and upset in his voice “I was. So in a way, I understand why you stabbed me” my dad said, “Should of finished the job” Wayne whispered, I looked at him in shock then back at my dad. “Is that a confession? Come on Wayne, you wanted the truth! It’s your turn now” my dad said to him “Just admit you stabbed me. Please” “I stabbed ya” Wayne said and he breathed out slowly, he started to shake so I just grabbed him to steady him but he went back a little as if trying to get me to hug him but I didn’t “Why’d you stab me, Wayne?” dad asked and I looked at him “Dad” I said and shook my head. “You gave up on me, I was struggling and you knew it. You said you’d make everything okay if I sorted my life out but” Wayne said through tears “I know, I’m sorry for all of it” dad said “That’s why I did it, since then my life’s been crap. If I could go back and” Wayne said and shook his head, looking away “There’s no need to” my dad said and Wayne started crying, through the whole time that I knew Wayne I’d never seen him cry, I looked at my dad then moved to the side of Wayne and pulled him to me “It’s over” dad said and I rocked Wayne a little bit, “I’m not apologising to ya, not for anything” Wayne said, my dad stood up and moved away as he came over, he pulled Wayne’s hand out his pocket and I saw the picture of his daughter in his hand. My dad sort of held Wayne for a second before he saw Sian walk off down the corridor “Can you call an ambulance for him?” dad said to Linda then walked out and after Sian. I looked at Linda then crawled back to Wayne; I put my arms round him and held him close, rocking him while Linda called an ambulance. “It’s okay” I whispered to Wayne then kissed his cheek and carried on rocking him.
