Phil's Pov

I had seconds to react.

Nick had thrown his knife at Dan and it was now hurtling through the air towards him, most likely about to kill him.

There was nothing I could do. Except...

I jumped to my feet and flung myself in front of that knife, everything seeming to go in slow motion.

I could see every little detail.

The knife now slowly twisting through the air.

Dan turning around to look, his eyes on my back. I could practically feel his fear and horror.

The knife, the cold metal, sliding through my stomach.

At first I didn't feel anything, I just fell to the ground, unable to get up.

Then I saw the blood flowing from the wound in my stomach, and it all hit me at once.

I could see Nick walking over to me, reaching his hand down towards my stomach... then everything went black.

Dan's Pov

I turned off the TV and got up to go to bed. I was getting quite tired, I had been up since one in the morning.

Just as I had climbed under the blankets, the phone rang, so I got up and went to pick it up.

"Hello?" Even my voice sounded tired.

"Hello, it's Nurse Joy, I'm looking after Phil in the hospital. He's not doing too great, we think you should come see him in case... in case he doesn't make it through today."

I was shocked, I really didn't know how to answer, so I just squeaked out a tiny "ok," and ran out the door, still in my pyjamas.

I got to the hospital in under ten minutes, and ran up to the front desk to ask where Phil was.

As I rushed into his room, I nearly threw up. When they said he didn't look so great, they really meant it.

Um, I'm not going to go into details.

Anyway, I sat by his bed for a few hours that day, still not getting any sleep despite how tired I was.

I eventually managed to get to sleep, but a change in the environment work me up a little while later.

Rather than the constant beep, beep, beep of the heart monitor thingy, it was now completely flat.

Phil's heart had stopped.

Phil's Pov (again)

I opened my eyes, blinking them a few times at the sudden brightness that was there.

Where was I?

When I opened my eyes again, I saw a person standing in front of me. Then my eyes began to focus more, and I realized I was in the middle of a large circle of people, in a... courtroom?

Why the hell was I in a courtroom?

As I looked around, I realized I had made a mistake. Not what the hell, I was in heaven.

I continued to examine the large room I was in, when I noticed something a bit disturbing. Everyone in that room was actually completely naked... including me.

I felt my cheeks grow warm and I knew I was blushing, but I tried to ignore it, moving to sit in the chair in the centre of the strange room.

"Welcome," a voice boomed from behind me, and I jumped a bit before turning to face whoever it was.

"I assume by now you have figured out where you are, although not really. No one truly knows what this room is, not even us. Few people make it here, but you are one of kind heart and brave soul. Erm, or is it the other way around...? Anyway, we are about to judge whether or not you are worthy of another chance at life. Pray that you receive this wonderful opportunity. I have been watching you, Philip Lester."

The whole thing passed by in a blur. I really have no idea what happened, I just answered truthfully to everything they asked me and hoped it earned me another chance at life.

By the end, everyone was staring thoughtfully down at me. Some were scowling, others looked expectant, but most were smiling. I took that as a good sign.

"Now," the man shouted again, "we will judge whether Philip Lester is worthy of a new life. Those who vote no, please raise your hands."

About half of the people in the room raised their hands. This was going to be close.

A large board against one wall lit up with the number 369, clearly the amount of people who wished for me to remain dead.

"Now, if you would like for Philip to return to Earth and live out the rest of his life however he wishes, please raise your hand."

Again, about half the people raised their hands.

I looked up at the board hopefully, and nearly jumped for joy when the number changed to 376.

"Philip Lester, you have saved your friend Dan's life in more ways than one. You deserve the chance to live again. I have been watching you, my boy, and I will grant you what I think you deserve. Today you have proven your bravery and loyalty towards Daniel Howell, and prevented him from making the journey here in the process. You have done this multiple times, though you may not have realized it. Philip Lester, I grant you four chances at a new life. If you chose to accept, you will be sent right back to wherever you call home, back down on Earth. Do you accept?"

"Yes sir, thank you so much!" I said, while frantically nodding my head.

"So be it!" the man boomed for the last time, and I saw another blinding light before I felt a sudden peace throughout my entire body and mind.

Then, yet again, everything went black.
