Seto's mother is NOT a sorcerer, and she didn't claim to be a sorcerer to protect anyone. You probs wont know or figure this out by the story so I see no harm in telling you.

                          
That Aliss and James were tried together, James was found guilty of sorcerery and being Aliss was his wife was convicted of "helping". 

                          
Basically the king is a corrupt ass and Aliss was 100% innocent and never new her husband was a sorcerer until they were hanged and thus she was killed for pretty much no reason other than that ass of a king said to kill her.
