Songfic.

“I’m tired of this Y/N! How can I help with this relationship if you keep pushing me away?” Niall yelled angrily.

I slammed my hands down on the other side of the island counter in Niall’s apartment. “I’m not pushing you away! In fact, I’m the one who tries to share everything with you, but you always shrug it off! It’s hurts, Ni! I don’t feel comfortable telling you anything if you’re just going to ignore it!”

“What the fuck are you talking about? I don’t ignore what you say at all! Ever!”

“Well, it sure as hell feels like it! And it’s quite ironic coming from the guy who always shoves me away when I ask about him!” I screamed as I grab my coat off the rack and begin to walk out the door.

“Where do you think you’re going?!” Niall yelled, grabbing my arm.

“Don’t touch me. I’m going back to my place,” I spat out, tugging my arm from his grip and throwing my coat on.

“Fine. Sure. Yes, that’s the perfect way to deal with an argument about not sharing anything! By leaving the first chance you get!” Niall yelled as he pointed towards the door.

I swung the door open, “Fuck you.” He slammed the door before I could see his reaction. I walked down the hallway to the elevator, infuriated and hurt.

Once I reached my apartment, I curled up in my bed but I couldn’t sleep. All I could think about was what Niall said to me earlier that night. Am I really not that open? Well, how could I be if he won’t listen? Plus, he never shares anything with me. Two people can’t function in a relationship if there’s no communication, and I was definitely learning the reality of that advice.

And I’m facing my fears, can’t you see me.

Niall slammed the door shut and banged his hand against it. His emotions were running wild. He was hurt, frustrated, sad, and terrified. The look on her face before he slammed the door was full of hatred and disgust. Niall leaned back against the wall, bringing his hands up to the face. He thought about the words they exchanged, or at least the ones he could remember. Shit, maybe this is what she was talking about. Do I ignore her without realizing it? he asked himself.

Niall couldn’t stop thinking about her and his relationship with her for the rest of the night. They had only been dating for one month, and they were already arguing. Was it even worth it? Niall shuddered at the thought of not having Y/N in his life. Then he realized the core of the problem - he was scared. Y/N was the first girl he had been with that made him start to think about forever, and frankly that was a terrifying yet exciting thought. So terrifying, that he didn’t know how to react so instead of opening himself up to her, he left her outside his walls. Of course she wouldn’t be open with him. It was her own form of self-defense; his fears turned into her fears. As Niall came upon this realization, he immediately picked up his phone. It was time to let her in.

Trying my best to reach out for your hand.

When I woke up, I found ten missed calls from Niall, no voicemails. I hesitated to call him back, but not talking to him would only contradict our entire argument last night. I slid my thumb across the lock screen and brought the phone up to my ear. No answer. I rolled out of bed and got ready for the day, preparing myself for a long conversation with Niall. We had to work out whatever was happening to us.

I opened the front door, finding a bouquet of flowers on my doormat and an envelope attached.

Dear Y/N,

I’m so sorry about last night. Both of us said things that were hurtful, but somewhat necessary. I don’t regret our argument because it’s led me to realize something about our relationship, and how we can figure this out. Meet me at my place at 10? I promise I’ll explain then.

Niall

Sliding my phone out of my pocket, I checked the time and made my way to the sidewalk, flowers and note in hand. Ten minutes later I was standing in front of Niall’s door. Taking a deep breath, I knocked on the door. I glanced down at my feet and bit my bottom lip, terrified about what would happen when it opened.

Maybe we can try to be better this time.

Niall had no need to ask who was at the door, because he already knew. Right on time. He set down her plate in front of his on the table, filled with the breakfast he had just finished making for them. As we was walking down the hallway, he prepared himself for what he was going to say to her. She had to know what he had only realized the night before. From there, they can work on their relationship wherever it may lead. Hopefully forever, Niall thought as he turned the doorknob.

She was standing awkwardly in front of the doorway, hesitant but definitely not wearing the facial expression she had when Niall saw her last.

“Y/N….I,” Niall stuttered. He was already freaking out.

“I’m sorry,” she blurted out, crossing the threshold. She wrapped her arms around Niall’s waist, molding into his chest, “I’m so sorry.”

Niall squeezed her tight and rubbed her back, kissing the top of her head. “No, I’m sorry, love. I’m the one who pushed you away.”

“No, that was me,” she mumbled into his chest.

He separated from her and cupped his hands around her cheeks, looking into her eyes. “No, no, it wasn’t. Well, to an extent, maybe. But the only reason you were blocking me out was because I wouldn’t let you see through my walls.”

She tilted her head, interested. Niall took a deep breath and explained everything that he figured out. She flinched when he said she was the only girl he thought about forever with, but happily. When he finally finished, Y/N walked over to the couch and sat down. He joined her, hoping that she would respond.

After what felt like years, she turned towards him, “Niall, I understand if you’re having difficulties opening up to me. But, just know that I’m here for you no matter what. I promise. Wherever we end up, positive or negative, I’ll always care.”

He took her hand in his and kissed it, “I know, I realize that now. You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me, and you have no idea how grateful I am that you didn’t let it slip right through my fingers. It’s not going to be easy, but I promise it will be worth it.”

She nodded, then Niall leaned in and placed his soft lips on hers. The kiss was passionate, and full of love. “I love you, Niall,” she whispered when she caught her breath.

He smiled, “I love you too. Want some breakfast, now?”

She laughed as he guided her into the kitchen. The rest of the day they sat around his place, finally breaking down their barriers.
