Chapter 2

Emma POV

Andy continued to speak soothing words to me while Kaylee ordered us all Oreo milkshakes.

Once our order was in I heard the door open and the little bell ring alerting the store of the customers arrival.

I didn't bother to look who it was so I just stayed in Andy's arms.

I heard the bell ding and the foot steps of the waitress approaching is and she set the three milkshakes in front of us and I grabbed the base of the glass and pulled it towards me.

Guiding the straw to my lips.

I couldn't help but laugh when I heard Andy from right next to me burp loudly.

I smacked him playfully and he said with a light chuckle ,"sorry, I'm excused."

I narrowed my eyes at him and said,"no you are supposed to say 'excuse me'."

He laughed and said,"Excuse you."

I shook my head and couldn't help but be overwhelmed with a musky fragrance from around the diner. Smelled of pine trees and forests and earth. It smelled like home.

Tears again came to my eyes at the reminder of home.

I heard two pairs of voices that I have never heard before. One deep and authority filled and the other was deep and authoritative as well.

Andy must have sensed my excitement and he whispered in my ear,"what has your attention Em?"

I shook my head and said,"nothing. Don't worry about it."

I turned my attention back to staring at my lap.

I didn't bother looking in the direction of the other voices. I just wanted to hear them. They comforted me for some reason.

I listened quietly and I also listened quietly to the conversation between Andy and Kaylee about something that was on a magazine cover. Something about some famous person and some gossip that was mentioned in the magazine.

I was pulling some cash from my pockets to go and pay the bill because I felt bad for having dragged Kaylee and Andy out here all this way just for my breakdown. I got up from the booth and made my way over to the counter when suddenly my foot slipped on something wet on the floor and I was waiting to feel the impact of my clumsy fall but I never felt it.

Instead I fell straight into the hard muscled arms of some man. I clenched my eyes closed tightly as I felt for an instant with our skin graze one another and I felt a surge of electric energy.

I gasped and struggled to get up but the man helped me stand up and I stared down at the floor as he cleared his throat to speak. "Are you okay ma'am?" The man asked me. His voice so smooth and silky I was melted to the core. I shook my head and cleared my mind as I replied. Still avoiding his gaze.

"Yes, thank you for catching me. I'm sorry I inconvenienced you. I must be going now. Goodbye."

I placed the money on the counter for the three milkshakes and walked out the door as I heard Kaylee and Andy calling after me. Their feet slamming against the ground as they hustled over to me where I was outside. As I leaned against the building I closed my eyes and for a minute allowed myself to feel the warm sun shining down on me and couldn't help but smile.

Even though I literally just tripped in public and would have fallen had diner guy not saved me.

Andy took my hands in his and said,"Honey do you realize how that man was looking at you back there. I saw it with my own eyes. He had nothing but adornment and awe of you. He must have been thinking about how beautiful you are and how graceful you are and-"

I cut him off there and smacked him. Little jerk teasing me about gracefulness. Says the one who tripped over a piece of paper lying on the floor right in front of his face. I didn't see it but I sure heard the string of profanities that left his lips and the thud from his fall.

He looped my arm through his and said," cmon lets get you home before the alpha kills me."

And you forgot to add so I can meet another one of his suitors he has in line for me. 

You would think after all this time he would have given up on trying to pair me with someone.

But he is so insistent on making sure I am taken care of before...

Before I knew it I was placed in the car and I felt Andy's skin brush my arm as he buckled me in again.

But before I heard the door close something crashed into me.

"Omygosh! Em! He is staring at you still! From the window!! I think he likes you!!" Kaylee said squealing. She hugged me tightly while she whispered all of this. But then adds with excitement "it looks like he is jealous too. He must be since you are in the car with Andy. Hahah! How cute! Maybe you two could-"

I cut her off and crossed my arms across my chest as tears gathered in my eyes and I said quietly,"It wouldn't work Kay.. You know why.. Who would want a defective person like me. Please... don't get my hopes up. Not even the moon goddess would pair me up with someone because she too knows it would never work."

I could only imagine the irritation plastered on Kaylee's face as I said that.

"Em that is a load of crap. There is someone out there for you! And-"

My whole being was shaking with anger and sadness and I then said with the alpha voice I have from my father,"it wouldn't work. Please just drop it... Andy.. Just- my voice broke as sobs gathered in my throat- take me home."

Kaylee shut the door to the car and walked off as Andy pulled out of the diner and set the car in motion. I could sense Andy's eyes on me but I turned away from him and closed my eyes leaning against the window as a single tear went down my face.

Even if there had been some kind o special found connection.. Even the tiniest connection it wouldn't work. He wouldn't want me.

He would just reject me like every other man has.

There isn't a single man in the world that would want me. Not even diner guy.

All there is for me is Rejection.

Rejection is all I have ever known.

Why even set myself up for disappointment.
