Chapter 1

Like every other day, she stood behind the cash register, picking at her nails and waiting for the next little boy or girl and their parents to approach her to order. Amy didn’t like her job; it was tacky and tedious but she kept it because it paid well enough and it was close enough to her home to walk.

She turned towards the front as a young child with beautiful blond curls and his older brother walked into the store, making the door chime in sync with their entrance.

“Hi,” Amy began, reciting the phrase used to address a customer as she layered on a smile that could only be described as and I-need-this-job-more-than-you-know smile, “What can I get for you today?”

The little boy tugged at his brother’s shirt and pointed to the kids’ meal. His brother rolled his eyes and ordered a few food items – none of which included the child’s choice - that equalled the total of $9.96.

Amy nodded and headed to the back to prepare their food, throwing in a toy that she suspected had made the child’s mind set on his kids’ meal. It really wasn’t so bad - especially in moments like these. Even as much as she complained about hating her job, it truly wasn’t terrible. Her customers were always cute and it made her happy to see a smile stretch from cheek to adorable cheek.

She returned with their food and gave a nice smile again, winking at the little boy which made him giggle. The older brother tossed his change of four cents into her tip jar, probably thinking that she needed it more than they did with her crummy job and then they walked to a table and sat down amongst the other dozen families eating, not even noticing the sigh Amy let slip from her rosy lips.

Amy looked at the clock. There was another hour until her shift was finished. Instead of being outside and playing in the light breeze with her friends, she was cooped up in a crowded restaurant, serving families.

She rolled her eyes again and frowned with that thought. It wasn’t exactly the truth; she probably wouldn’t be spending time with her friends even if she wasn’t here. She’d never really been a ‘social butterfly’. But then again, she’d always had two best friends for as long as she could remember, Silvia and Greg.

Amy checked her phone for messages at the mention of their names. Nothing. She hadn’t been really hoping for anything though. Ever since Liv had gotten a boyfriend, she had seemed distracted and rarely hung out with her other than at school. Not to mention Greg boycotting her most of the time and not even bothering with the curtsey of small talk when they did hang out.

The bell sounded marking the entrance of another customer. This time, Amy recognized their faces. It was a group of kids from her school, the jocks and their girlfriends. She’d always imagined that being part of their group would get her into a whole bunch of cool parties because they always seemed to have so much fun. It wasn’t like that was everything that she fantasized about, only that it would be an interesting experiment.
