Home Is Where the Heart Is

Start from the beginning

Niall found himself crying, as well. "Oh my god," He mumbled, "Princess, I'm so - I can't even apologize enough. It wouldn't fix anything. I should be there, I should - I can't believe I-" He couldn't seem to speak in steady sentences, therefore his words came out just as broken as his thoughts. "So everything went well, then? You're healthy? The baby's healthy?" He asked, running his free hand through his hair.

"Yeah, we're alright," You said, before glancing up at the ceiling, "Missing Daddy, though."

"I know, princess. I know. I'm leaving right now, okay?" And he wasn't exaggerating when he said this, because he actually stood and found his suitcase in the corner of his room, beginning to mindlessly fill it with his belongings, while still carrying a conversation with you. "I can't be here without you and my baby. I need to see both of you."

"But your job..." You started, but Niall finished your sentence for you.

"Doesn't matter nearly as much as you two do," He said, stuffing a plaid shirt into his luggage. "They can fire me all they want. My wife just gave birth to my baby. It's bad enough that I missed that part, I refuse to miss any more." He zipped his luggage closed and placed it on the floor, pulling the handle up. He grabbed his wallet and shoved it in the pocket of his black dress pants, while simultaneously shoving his feet into a pair of shiny black shoes, because they were the only ones he had with him.

He eventually forced himself to hang up, because he knew you were tired, and he also knew he couldn't talk to you once he got on the plane. Niall had enough Irish luck to catch the last flight of the night, the last one that would take him where he needed to be. He grew more and more impatient the longer he sat there, watching the sky through the plane windows. He partly wished he could steer the plane himself, because maybe then he'd get home a little quicker. He didn't want to spend another second without you and the baby. He began to impatiently tap his foot on the floor, following a beat of his own.

After the plane landed, Niall had to refrain from pushing past people. He felt as if the world was moving slowly on purpose, just to mess with his already spinning mind. After picking up his luggage and finishing off anything else he felt he needed to take care of, Niall called a taxi service and told the driver, "I need to get to the hospital as soon as possible."

Niall was almost tripping over his own footsteps as he raced through the automatic doors, nodding briefly at the receptionist behind her desk. He stopped for nothing. Niall Horan was on a mission and nothing could stop him. He didn't even take the elevators, because he felt he didn't have time to wait for the doors to open and close. He knew he could move at his own pace if he took the stairs.

When Niall found your room, he invited himself in to see you'd fallen asleep. It had been hours since your phone call, so he didn't blame you. But the baby was still in your arms. Niall smiled at the sight before him. All of the hurrying in the past few hours was certainly worth this. He dropped all of his things right there and crossed the room to you. Knowing you probably needed to sleep, all he did was stroke your forehead before lifting the baby from your arms. He smiled down at her and rocked her in his arms, immediately silencing her cries with his voice, "Shh, it's Daddy, baby. It's Daddy. I'm here." The cries and the loss of your baby woke you instantly, but you were calm again when your eyes landed on Niall. "Hey," He faintly smiled, leaning down to peck your forehead. "How are you feeling?"

"Better now," You smiled, admiring how comfortable your baby looked in her father's arms.

"You're right, she is beautiful," Niall said, touching his baby's hand with his finger. She wrapped her whole hand around his one finger, and Niall beamed. Niall tore his eyes from the baby, only to settle them on you. "I love you," He spoke, before holding his baby's hand and saying, "And I love you, too, little angel."

"Come here. Both of you," You demanded, while holding your arms out and wiggling your fingers. Niall sat on the edge of the bed and placed the baby back in your arms. Niall took your free hand in his, intertwining your fingers together. As his smile met yours, and your baby lay peacefully on your side, you knew you were just beginning a very magical adventure. And even as years passed, the magic never faded.
