— Come on, Tara, pick up the phone. — Sam muttered to herself, putting the phone to her ear, when the rings continued to be replaced by her sister's voice, which was so necessary now. — Answer me.
Katherine looked worriedly at Carpenter, who continued to wail thoughtlessly to herself. Her gaze snapped to the rearview mirror when Stu appeared in it, rolling his eyes, clutching the backs of the two front seats with his hands. He took a deep breath, as if he were watching something tedious, boring, and leaned his cheek against the back of the seat.
— So we're going to the hospital to save your best friend? — Macher asked in an excited tone, straightened up, but continued to cling to the seats with his hands. He shifted his gaze to the nervous Samantha. — Billy's daughter, then. An interesting choice of love interest.
Murphy clenched her jaw, literally locking the irritated "fuck you" that wanted to fly out in her mouth. Right now, she had absolutely no time for hallucinations in the form of her long-dead crazy uncle. But if Sam saw her talking to herself, she'd think her ex-best friend/love interest had gone crazy.
— Come on, Tara, answer me! — Sam screamed, furiously poking her finger at the smartphone screen, starting to call her younger sister's phone again.
The redhead tightened her hands on the steering wheel and pressed the gas pedal harder, as if wanting to break it. She didn't stop when the red light came on, but on the contrary, she raced forward, and, if she was lucky, did not cause a car accident.
Carpenter just looked at it indifferently and returned her gaze to the phone, silently offering her support.
— I texted Richie. He's already on his way to the hospital, so he'll take care of Tara until we get there. — Samantha shared, glancing at Katherine.
The girl just nodded at these words, not wanting to show her true feelings in any way. The bitterness that rose in her throat and her heart clenched from something. But she swallowed it all, for Tara's sake.
Stu tilted his head, looking with interest from one girl to the other with a wide trademark grin on his lips. It was as if he understood something that only he knew.
Murphy wanted to swear at herself. With her own hands, she had deprived herself and Sam of such an important and necessary ally as Dewey Riley because of some fucking premonition, and perhaps doomed Tara to death at the hands of a Ghostface if they did not arrive on time.
And even though her sixth sense had never let her down, Tara's life, and maybe Richie's, wasn't worth it.
If Dewey had gone with them and the redhead hadn't wasted any time convincing him that they didn't need him, the two of them could have been at the hospital by now, pulling Tara out of the hands of the Ghostface.
Katherine abruptly turned her head in the direction of Sam, who exclaimed joyfully, holding the phone tightly to her ear, but after a second she froze in one position, turned pale and seemed to stop breathing for a moment.
Murphy understood everything and cursed the car that it couldn't go faster. Stu was silent all this time, just watching the situation unfold in front of him. All he needed was a bucket of popcorn in his hands to complete the image.
Samantha turned on the speakerphone, wishing that the girl sitting next to her, driving the car, could also hear everything that the Ghostface was saying to her. The redhead caught herself thinking when Samantha was told to choose, Tara or Richie, that she herself, if in her place, would not hesitate for a second, would choose the young Carpenter.
This is understandable.
Katherine knew Tara, they were considered best friends, almost sisters, except without common blood, but with a special bond, while Richie was... just the boyfriend of her former best friend, whom she kissed a couple of times and was in love with. Indeed, the choice is obvious to her.
