He sits on the rooftop in solitude, a cool night breeze swaying through his hair every so often. The stars and moon provide just enough light for Grian to be able to make out his surroundings, but the quiet and serenity of Hermitcraft at night brings him peace as he breathes in deep, expelling the air with an exhale seconds later. His feet swing back and forth lightly as they dangle off of the edge of the building.

Grian slowly stands up as to not crack the glass of the roof of the Barge, and leaps into flight, taking course to the jungle where his starter base resides. Flying over the ocean, Grian dips down to fly parallel to the water, occasionally running his fingers along the cool, calm substance. Rising once again as he reaches land, Grian expertly lands at the front of his starter base and steps inside, making sure to lock the door behind him.

The journey, having taken energy out of him, had left Grian a little tired, so he wasn't surprised when he started breathing heavier in order to catch his breath. But as Grian sits down on his comfy couch to recuperate, his body rejects the idea, and continues to force his lungs to keep going. Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. Fast paced. No stopping.

Grian has exhausted himself before, but his body usually manages to reset itself to a regular, calmer pace within a minute. But for some unknown reason, Grian can't seem to breathe properly. Every inhale nearly defective, Grian feels as if his throat has turned into a straw and his lungs have collapsed.

As panic starts to fill Grian, he grips his shirt tightly as he stumbles up the stairs to his bedroom, every fiber in his body tingling. Once there, he collapses onto the floor and starts tightly gripping his hair, pulling it until it stings. This does not deter his out-of-control lungs, however, and the repeated, desperate inhales continue as Grian's panic only rises. He pushes himself up against a wall and throws his head back while tears stream down his face as he gasps for air, confused and scared. Eventually, Grian passes out leaning against the wall from exhaustion.

It's been a week since Grian's first instance of losing control of his lungs. Not only have these episodes become more frequent, they also have been affecting Grian physically. Every step he takes, whether on flat ground or a stair, is filled with pain. He feels that he can barely even lift his arms at some points. He can tell that other Hermits have taken notice, but he can't bother to care. Not when he's in a constant state of pain and fear. But, it isn't exactly a surprise to him when X and Joe ask to have a private meeting with him.

Groaning at the need to leave his bed, Grian reluctantly gets up and makes an attempt to make his hair look slightly neater and more presentable. He quickly exits his base and winces as he stretches his wings to fly.

After the struggle of getting to their designated meeting spot, Grian puts on his happy face and greets the two, who already stand there waiting for him.

"Hey Joe, X, how are you?" Grian asks cheerfully.

"Hey there G," Joe starts. "We're doing alright. Look, Grian, I won't sugarcoat this, so let's just jump right into it. You can drop the act."

Grian smile begins to falter.

"Many Hermits have come to us with concern for you. They say you've been behaving oddly," X approaches Grian and places a hand on his shoulder. "We just wanted to make sure you're doing okay," X smiles down at Grian, who looks back with a blank stare.

Grian waits a few seconds, thinking of a way to respond. "Just been a little tired lately," he decides to go with. "You know how it is, building my base and such, losing track of time, you understand, right?" Grian says, tilting his head and scratching the back for a moment.

"Alright," X begins. "Just make sure you get some more sleep, okay?"

"We know how important your base is to you, but your health is more important," Joe adds.

"I'll try my best," Grian promises before the three wave goodbye and head their separate ways.

As Grian returns to his base, the exhaustion starts to set in his muscles, but he keeps himself suspended before he makes a messy landing and enters his starter base. But as he returns to the comfort of his bedroom, he feels his airways start to close down again, and Grian collapses onto his bed. Not again, not again! He thinks to himself.

Grian pulls his knees to his chest and presses his back up against the wall, gripping his hair tightly and starting to hyperventilate while a stream of tears flows down his face. He tries to use a sensory calming method to steady his breathing, but his mind is swimming and he can barely see or feel anything, and can't even breathe in for 2 seconds, much less 7, before his body forces him to exhale and inhale again quickly.

As Grian's panic rises, he loses track of time and his limbs start to tingle and lose their feeling. Despite this, he still manages to push his body off of his bed and stumble his way over to his bathroom, messily slamming the door behind him. Pressing his back to the door and scanning the smaller room with his tearing eyes, they land on his medicine cabinet, located over the sink.

Grian stumbles over to his sink and grips the sides, leaning over it. Painfully reaching up and opening the cabinet, he scans the different medicines stored. Eventually, Grian's eyes land on a white bottle with a white and blue label, which he quickly grabs and closes the cabinet.

Sitting down on the bathroom floor, Grian opens the bottle and tosses the lid aside, pouring a bunch of the pills into his hands. After struggling to down them dry, he turns on the faucet and cups the water in his hands, swallowing the small pills one at a time, interrupting his already sporadic breathing rate.

Grian plops back down on the floor after downing about half of the bottle, leaning his head back to the wall and closing his eyes. Minutes later, he starts to feel pain in his abdominal region before blacking out.

People are yelling. Some are crying. An unconscious body is rushed into a hospital and quickly hooked up to a cardiopulmonary bypass machine.

Many Hermits crowd the hallway outside of the hospital room, all of them paralyzed in shock and confusion with tears streaming down most of their faces.

By the time they got out a defibrillator, it was already too late. By the time they realized there was something wrong with Grian's heart, it was already too late. By the time Mumbo had found Grian on the floor of his bathroom and called Xisuma and Joe, it was already too late. And by the time they realized that something was wrong, it was already too late.

yall my motivation kind of went down the drain

anyways here's an explanation of what happened:

- the drug that grian 0v3rd0sed on was theophylline, which is supposed to make breathing easier through widening the bronchial tubes (the tubes in your lungs in which air flows through aka the way you breathe)
- taking too much theophylline can cause cardiac arrhythmias, which is an irregular heartbeat, which causes heart attacks
- by the time mumbo found grian, his body cells had already been starved of oxygen
- the people who were trying to save him tried to use a defibrillator, which resets the electrical pulse in the heart to reset the heartbeat so that blood can properly be pumped throughout the body
- but they also tried a cardiopulmonary bypass machine, which basically acts as an artificial heart by connecting to blood vessels to a machine that pumps blood while the heart is unable too
- i think you know what ended up happening

anyways thanks for reading!!!!!!!!!
