Kurono clash

Location - Hell (3rd Layer)

The following is an account of the so-called 'Kurono clash,' a famous rivalry between two well-established schools of combat styles: the Kuromentri school and the Kuroeta school. Both combat styles revolve around using matter magic to manipulate weapons during combat.

Origin

The rivalry began at a time before both schools gained renown, and neither school has released an official statement on the matter. As such, the exact beginnings of the rivalry are unclear, and the many rumors that have emerged make discerning the truth far more difficult.

One of the more popular rumors is that both schools were originally one before they split into two styles. The original style was a dual weapon style that involved having one weapon focused on offense and the other on defense. It is believed that there were originally two successors, and due to an unknown conflict, they split off, with one starting the Kuromentri school and the other starting the Kuroeta school.

Another rumor suggests that both schools sent disciples off to fight for opposing sides of a great war. The inevitable clash and subsequent deaths resulted in an eternal blood feud. Another rumor states that the rivalry between both schools was artificially propagated by the heads of both institutions as a publicity stunt. Another rumor also suggests that both schools hate each other simply because of the similarity between their names, resulting in copyright issues.

However, the most likely theory is that the rivalry stems from both schools being located in the third Layer of hell and their similarities to each other, with both teaching matter mages weapon-focused combat styles. Furthermore, a certain amount of competitive rivalry is to be expected from any institute in similar fields.

Kurometri style

The Kurometri style is considered an offense-focused style that involves altering the weapon's shape during combat. This can range from allowing the user to slip past defenses to changing the weapon's reach to throw the opponent off balance. The weakness of this style is that constantly manipulating the weapon's shape will greatly decrease its durability. As such, it is not uncommon for disciples of the Kurometri school to break their weapons during combat. The disruption of magic due to constant form changes would also make repairing said weapons difficult. The Kurometri style has since developed two sub-styles: the chipped path and the flowing path.

The chipped path involves only minutely changing the shape of the weapon in order to throw the opponent off balance. This can involve slightly adjusting the curve of a blade when deflecting attacks or slightly adjusting the reach of the weapon. The use of only minute changes allows the weapon's durability to be preserved.

The flowing path involves a far more extreme change of shape. Most famously, this involves increasing the reach by several meters at the moment of attack, allowing for a mid to long-range slash or stab. Some disciples even opt to not swing at all, instead attacking purely by changing the shape of the weapon. This, of course, greatly lowers the durability, so those who study the flowing path often rely on the use of multiple low-quality weapons.

Kuroeta style

The Kuroeta school is a style that involves enhancing the strength and traits of the weapon. The basics of the style involve using matter magic to strengthen the blade to allow it to absorb any blow. Shields and armor can also be enhanced in such a way, and as such, it is often referred to as a much more defensive style than the Kurometri style.

While the Kuroeta style is more balanced than the Kurometri style, it is a mistake to assume that it is incapable of offense. The Kuroeta style is focused on adjusting the traits of the material the weapon is made of, which can involve hardening and strengthening the edges of blades to allow it to slash through armor. Similarly, it can also be used to increase the elasticity of the weapon to allow it to deflect and absorb strikes, as well as any other such advantageous adjustments.

The more advanced techniques of the Kuroeta style involve using opportunities of contact to transfer matter-energy to the opponent's equipment. This can allow disciples of the Kuroeta style to slowly degrade the opponent's equipment to the point it would no longer be effective.

Conclusion

While the Kuroeta style can be seen as more reliable, the flashy nature of the flowing path of the Kurometri style currently makes it more popular. However, there are rumors that the new generation of Kuroeta style masters are experimenting with using materials with unusual properties to enhance their style; however, this cannot be confirmed.
