Trident

The following is an account and review of the combat technique known as the trident to determine whether it should be implemented in training.

The trident is a weapon technique that delivers multiple strikes from a single thrust. It is a technique that originated in the human realm during the time referred to by the humans as 'the age of darkness.' The technique was believed to have spread to other realms due to the migration of the hybrids.

Fundamentals

The basis of the technique is to harmonize the energy infused in the blade (or preferred weapon) with the surrounding threads of energy during the wind-up. During the subsequent thrust, the energy will be forcefully pushed through the threads. The sudden rush of energy and clash within the target would deal damage similar to an internal blunt strike. The number of strikes can vary based on the skill of the attacker and the concentration of magic energy in the area. However, most often, there will be 2 additional strikes. This is believed to have aided in the origin of the name, a 3 pronged strike much like the prongs of a trident. It should be noted that while the technique can be used without a weapon, the strain and backlash can result in injury. One subject (redacted) lost an arm in one such experiment.

Even if the original strike of the weapon is blocked, the flow of energy would still hit the target, although to a lesser intensity. Parrying or dodging the attack appears to be an effective defense against the trident. However, the natural energy flow may allow the target to be struck regardless. Furthermore, the quick charge time and the technique's flexibility allow it to easily supplement other combat arts.

The intensity of the strikes has been found to correlate with:

1 - The force and speed of the thrust

2 - Density of magic energy in the area

3 - harmonization of magic with the surrounding

Attempts to control the location of the strikes have proven very difficult. Attempts to channel the strike through artificially formed threads of energy by the attacker have proven too disruptive, resulting in:

1 - Reduction in intensity

2 - Increase in backlash

3 - Increased in energy cost

4 - Greater concentration needed by the attacker.

As such, attempting to control the flow is not advised in most circumstances. However, the nature of the core of the attacker appears to have an impact on the location of the strikes:

Matter core: The distribution of the strikes are much closer, some even overlapping.

Force core: The distribution of the strikes are further apart, and often, the resulting flow will not hit the target. Force mages and those with force cores are not recommended to use the technique.

Life core: The distribution appears to veer towards vital points. While the strikes do not always land on vital points, they appear much closer than others. It should also be noted that the strikes appear to veer toward vital points, even on creatures whose physiology the attacker is unfamiliar with.

Other cores show no identifiable correlation. However, studies have not been done on those with primal cores. It has been theorized that primal mages and those with primal cores could use the trident more efficiently.

It is also noted that minimal magic effects can be applied to the trident. However, as with controlling the location, the act disrupts the flow of magic.

Conclusion

The trident technique has high combat utility. As the trident technique was developed and made for use by humans, progress in training should be minimally hindered. Its use is an addendum to standard combat rather than a core style.

Thereby, (redacted) recommends that training for the trident technique be implemented in non-compulsory standard training.
