Maybe I just wanted him.

The thought that I actually missed his attempts at getting under my skin made my chest tighten.

The way he had looked at me just before I left, still was an ever present image in my mind. Those tears were daggers and they were still embedded in me.

I heard a knock on my front door. I quickly got up and dried of, wrapping the warmed towel around my body before going to grab it.

Des filled the entirety of my entry way. He almost had to bend down to see below the door frame. He held a delicate black silk dress in his hands.

"Sorry to interrupt your bath time, peaches," he chuckled. "The Morningstar sends his regards."

I sighed. "Come in," I said, pushing the door open further and making space for him to enter.

"He said to give you this to wear tonight," he said.

"Any other demands," I muttered. "Or is that all he wants."

Des snorted. "No, that about sums it up."

Then I made for the bathroom and changed into the dress. Once changed, I swept my hair up into a tight high ponytail, making sure to lay down my baby hairs with some gel to get edges sleek and shiny.

I decided to keep it simple for make up. Light foundation and some lashes. Just a brush of shimmer on the lids and cheekbones before finishing with some tinted gloss on the lips. Took me all of five minutes to do but it was good enough.

"What's up with you and Adelaide," I asked from inside the bathroom. I pulled out my toothbrush and began scrubbing relentlessly.

It took quite a bit of time for him to answer.

"I'm not sure if I'm allowed to speak about it," he said finally. "And definitely not allowed to speak about it with you."

I groaned. "What did you do, Des," I asked in annoyance, finally opening the door and striding out towards the shoes. "It takes a lot to piss Addie off. So spill."

"I don't kiss and tell," he said, flashing a charming grin. But I watched how quickly it faded and I knew he was bullshitting me.

I quickly strapped my heels and stood, smoothing out the front of my dress as best I could. It hung loose at the neckline revealing a little too much cleavage for my taste. The body was tight fitting, except for the fabric that pooled at my hips before flowing flawlessly to my ankles. A long slit ran up the dress, revealing a good portion of my leg.

It was stunning, but a little much for me.

"Whatever," I muttered, teetering towards the door in these ridiculous strappy heels that stood on a knifes edge. "Has Levi gotten his medicine yet?"

Des came to my aid, taking my arm and guiding me out of the room.

"The healer is still making his rounds," he answered simply. "Still no improvements."

If only Malachi could see the aftermath of his schemes. How likely would he be to take such a risky gamble with Levi's life?

I almost dared to ask Des if he had seen him. If he had miraculously showed his face since the last time I asked.

Yesterday. I had asked about him yesterday.

"Have you—"

"No," he said firmly. Anger burned in his voice. "No, I haven't seen Malachi. But if I do, I'm not sure if I'd be able to keep my hands from wrapping around his throat before I let you know."
