I feel the cold less and less, as an ember grows in my heart. I wander further from Anhilde into the dark wood-lined tunnels of the floating bark.

It feels good to hunt again. I am out of practice, and the first mouse gets away, but I strike true on my second attempt. When the body goes limp in my jaws, my throat tickles. I feel an urge like a sneeze or a cough that builds when I imagine how delicious the meat would be if it were a little hotter.  I am sure I could burn it. It would be the first time I burned my own prey.

But I know that wood burns, too, and we are surrounded by it. Anhilde has warned me that she will not be welcome by the other humans here, and I don't wish to give her away and hinder our progress.

Reluctantly, I swallow the hot lump in my throat. My kill is fresh enough to still be warm, and I console myself with that.
