"No."

"It's one night." You argued.

"Absolutely not."

"Come on, Jehan. Please?" You begged. "I need someone to go with me, Marius is busy, and you're the only other person that knows how to behave at such an event!" You pouted, sticking your bottom lip.

"I'm sorry Y/N, but my answer is no."

...

An hour later Jehan was offering his hand as you stepped down from the carriage. "I can't believe you talked me into this." Jehan grumbled.

"Me neither." You snickered. Jehan handed your invitation to the attendant at the door, who waved you in with a smile. You were immediately taken aback by the scene before you. The partygoers were draped in a variety of glittering fabrics. You were hit by a wall of flowery scents. You turned to look at Jehan, who was watching the partygoers with a bored expression.

"Lord give me strength." He muttered.

"It's one night. You'll live." You patted his arm as you made your way to the dance floor. "All we have to do is figure out what houses are hiring staff."

"I still don't know why you need me here."

"Really?" You raised an eyebrow. "You really don't know why I, an unmarried woman, would need a male companion?" He sighed. "Come on, Jehan."

The music picked up, and couples began flocking to the dance floor. You eyed the older gentlemen and matrons sticking to the sides of the ball room. "Who do you think our best bet is?" You asked. Jehan chuckled. "What? I'm being serious!" He pointed to something behind you with a smirk. You turned around to see the refreshment table. Or more specifically, the groups of people hovering around the refreshment table. You both stared at the table for a moment.

"You take one side, I take the other, meet in the middle and compare notes?" Jehan just grunted, and began moving the way you had indicated. As you slowly made your way down the long banquet table, you kept an ear open to the various conversations.

"...lost my investments in..."

"...just tried this amazing face cream..."

"...gets one letter from his mother and he just up and leaves. Where am I supposed to find a new butler on such short notice?" You stopped.

"Apologies for eavesdropping," You said, putting on a charming smile. "But did I hear you say you're in need of a new butler?" The woman nodded. "I have a friend who is looking to downsize his estate, and he's always taken great pride in the people he employs." You spotted Jehan and waved him over. He stuffed an hors d'oeuvre in his mouth before making his way over. "This is my friend I was telling you about." You told the woman as you beamed up at Jehan. "I was just telling her about how you're looking to downsize, and it just so happens that my new friend here is looking for a new butler." You winked up at him. Jehan had a slight smile on his face.

"Y/N is correct, I am looking to reduce my staffing costs. I must warn you though; the staff I employ are of a high caliber and are paid as such." He said, playing on the woman's pride.

"Oh that won't be a problem." She waved a hand.

"Wonderful." Jehan got the woman's information and promised to send his "butler" to her estate before offering his arm to you. You slipped your hand in to the crook of his elbow and allowed him to lead you away...

...and onto the dance floor. You looked at him with a raised eyebrow as he pulled you close, taking your hand and resting his other on your waist.

"I thought we would've left right away." You remarked as Jehan eased the two of you into a slow waltz.

"Well it wouldn't look right if we just ran out, now would it?" He responded.

"So we had to dance?" You teased, delighting in the red that appeared on your partner's cheeks. "We couldn't have just found a place near the wall to drink?" Jehan stopped dancing and began to lead you to the wall. You tugged him right back towards you. He looked confused, but continued the dance nonetheless.

"But I thought—"

"I was just teasing, Jehan. Relax." He continued to watch you, before his lips curled into a smirk.

"Minx." He said, dipping you back. When he pulled you back up, you couldn't help but notice that he held you even tighter.

You ended up staying far later than either of you had originally planned. In fact, the only reason the two of you left when you did was because you noticed you were the only couple still dancing, and the host and hostess were starting to become impatient if their tight smiles were any indication. With the carriage long gone, you both had to make the trek back to the café. With your shoes clasped in one hand and Jehan's coat over your shoulders, you couldn't help but feel that your relationship with the aforementioned had... changed. And you weren't sure exactly how.

You were shaken out of your thoughts by the feeling of a hand brushing against yours. You jerked your arm back. "Sorry, was I walking too close?" Jehan shook his head, with a peculiar look on his face.

"I can carry those." He gestured to your shoes. "They look heavy."

"My shoes look heavy?" You echoed. "I'm sure I can handle it." You said, biting back a smile.

"Just give them to me." He all but snatched the shoes from your hand, switching them to the hand furthest from you. You both descended into a companionable silence once again.

Then, slowly, you felt Jehan's hand graze yours again. Instead of reacting, you decided to wait and see what Jehan's plan was. Slowly, his pinky intertwined with yours. After continuing to walk with your pinkies linked, Jehan grew bolder and laced his fingers through yours so your entire hands were pressed together.

By the time you made it back to the café, you each had an arm around each other. As you made your way to the back of the café to change back into your regular clothes you heard the faint din of conversation. When you re-emerged you were met with the site of a flustered Jehan, and Enjolras, Grantaire, and Eponine looking far too pleased with themselves. "Did I miss anything?" You asked as your emerged from behind the changing screen.

"Well—" Grantaire was cut off by Jehan slapping his hand over his mouth.

"Nope!" Jehan said forcefully. "Just small talk." He levelled a glare at Eponine and Enjolras. "I'll walk you home." He told you.

"Yeah he will." Eponine muttered.

"Shut. Up." Jehan told her, before holding out his hand. You slipped your hand into his, ignoring the chorus of "oooooohs" as you did so. As you left the café, you turned to him.

"Is everything okay?" You asked. Jehan seemed determined not to look at you.

"Oh you know, just the usual teasing. They seem to think I fancy you." He said. He froze, realizing what he just said.

"Oh." You said softly. Neither of you said another word until you were standing in front of your home.

"Well, I guess I'll see you later." Jehan said quickly, letting go of your hand, and turning away with a rushed "Bye!"

"Wait!" You called after him. It was now or never. "Do you?" He stopped, still not facing you.

"Do I what?" He asked.

"Fancy me?" It was silent.

"...No." He said at last. You felt your shoulders fall.

"Oh." You said, trying not to sound dejected. Apparently you were unsuccessful, because Jehan turned around and spoke up again.

"Unless...you fancy me too?" He asked, slowly walking toward you. You were nervous, but hey. You made it this far. You reached out and took his hands in yours. He watched your face, a slow smile spreading across his face. You leaned in, and as you brushed your lips against his, you whispered.

"Is this a good enough answer?" He hummed.

"I could use a little more convincing."
