Chapter Twenty-Six: Risk and Reward

We were currently running through the woods, the four of us when I suddenly became uneasy.

"The pack is in the woods. We need to hurry." Edward called to me as I looked at my brother and Bishna.

"The pack, you mean those wolves that almost----"

"--yes Eve, I'm sorry, love. We have to swim where we're going. We haven't made the treaty line, but they'll be there waiting. Be on your guard." Edward surprisingly picked up speed which caused me to smile.

Fang was at my side, sprinting at a leisurely pace, his breathing just as even as mine. "So... You sealed the deal; I can feel it in the aura around him." Fang smiled at me, which caused me to roll my eyes. He was referring to the bite I gave him, but then again, Edward also bit me, and I was starting to feel a subtle change.

"Yeah... I couldn't wait anymore, I put it off for so long because I was afraid, but i'm even more afraid now that I'll lose him." I glanced at him, stopping next to Edward, right at the rushing river that wasn't too far below. On the other side was nothing, but I didn't let my eyes fool me, my ears picked up many thudding footfalls before wolves, and one person stepped through the trees to greet us on the other side.

"Cullen." The man's voice was gruff but athorarive as he spoke, his eyes flickering to me before hardening. "I see you brought the beast with you." His tone was harsher than it needed to be; I snarled at his insult, feeling my teeth indent my bottoms lip.

"We aren't here to fight; I'd take care of how you speak to my sister." Fang's voice rang out louder than the wolf leader's, stepping next to me as Edward grasped my hand tightly in his.

"What do you want, Cullen? You know you cannot walk our lands; it's within the treaty."
His eyes flickered to Edward, watching his lips pull down into a frown.

"We're here to ask permission to cross your lands to the ocean. We have urgent business to attend—life-threatening. " Edward's voice rung out with urgency. He didn't want to fight; it was the last thing on his mind. I could hear the wolves grumbling and shuffling at the words 'life-threatening.'

"Life-threatening? The only threat here is you and your ----"

I didn't have it in me to be patient; in my fit of annoyance and anger, my first struck a tree, and a roar of warning left my lips. "THIS IS BIGGER THAN YOUR PETTY SQUABBLE WITH THIS FAMILY. THE FUCKING WORLD IS AT STAKE. GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS!"  I started to walk forward only to get dragged back by a pair of arms, kicking and screaming in frustration.

The leader watched me for a moment more, holding his hand up as the wolves behind him began to bristle, stepping forward.

"We must go... It's not just this town in danger... Every life on earth is if we don't leave right now. I don't want to fight you, Sam. Even if you don't permit us, we're crossing anyway. Like *Eve* said, this is bigger than both of our families. Just let us pass."

Edward stepped forward just as Sam did; they seemed to study each other, neither one breaking away from the other. Sam sighed and shooed the wolves away before turning to look at us. "You may pass. I'll also contact Carlisle on this world-threatening matter. Don't make me regret it, Cullen." With that, he was gone, and without a worry, we leaped over the treaty line and made the journey to the beach in no time.

"I always wondered how you all travel around so fast. Swimming?" I raised an eyebrow at him, watching him smile. "With the eyes we have, the underwater world is breathtaking." He grabbed my hand, and we leaped off the cliff into the watery depths below.

I have no idea how long we were swimming, but I was elated when I saw land up ahead. I then felt irritated and annoyed because we were in a place I never thought I'd return to.
