“Diamond.” It was Kenny. I was mad instantly.

“Hey, girl.”

Calling me like everything is all right. When you had good pussy, they always called back. “What do you
want?”

“I know we’ll never see each other again, which is all good. But you asked me a question and I will answer it.”

“What question would that be?” I couldn’t keep the contempt from my voice. It made me shake with anger.

“I never understood it, but my brother said the woman he fell in love with never told him her name; not that he could remember.”

I got quiet. My heart was racing.

“And?”

“I don’t know why I’m telling you this; my family prides itself on keeping family business between family.”

“Yet you’re on the phone with me.”

“I know, shoot me. I can’t even stand your ass, going through my gahdamn phone. And I thought you were a cool broad.”

“I don’t have time for this.”

“Well make time. I have something to tell you.”

“That you’re an asshole?”

“You know what…”

I was getting defensive. “What, jerk?”

“Well listen.”

"Listen to what.”

“Diamond…”

“Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea.”

I didn’t like the sinking feeling in my gut.

“My brother called out for her in his sleep. He told me all he could ever think about was this woman. He doesn’t remember her face or anything. He said he was drunk when they met. The same night she helped him up to the room because he was too drunk to walk…I talked to my
sister-n-law, who is bitter over the entire thing. And she told me he called out for Princess Webster all night, and was actually making love to her in his sleep.”

I didn’t hear anything else because when he said my name I dropped the phone.

The line disconnected.

I grabbed my coat and ran out to my car, devastated.

Kenny’s brother was my soul mate...
