I hummed as I worked the soil, digging a small hole for a new plant. The sunshine felt great on my skin as I worked, warming me to my center. Afterwards I weeded around the existing flowers, pulling up pesky weeds by the root.

_: Phew!

I sighed, wiping away some sweat from my brow.

???: You're working hard I see.

I spun around at the unknown voice to face a man, one whom I had never seen before.

_: Who are you? How did you get on the grounds? You're trespassing.

Ah, I should tell someone. But no one is around.

???: Your father misses you.

I froze. It felt as if my breath was sucked out of me.

...Father?

How could this man know him?

_: What do you want from me?

I choked out.

???: Not what I want, what he wants.

I grimaced, toes curling in my shoes. I don't care what he wants.

???: Nothing else to say? I suppose not. Regardless, your father misses you very much, so much so you should expect a visit.

My jaw clenched on the word. Visit. No, I wouldn't allow it. The men, they wouldn't allow it. There's no way I'm ever going to face that man again.

???: There's much to discuss, you and he.

I stared down at my feet, unable to look at this uninvited stranger.

???: Really, playing vampire's princess...it's getting old, isn't it?

Nothing. No words would come out of my mouth, despite screaming them in my mind.

???: I'll deal with them later. For now, you are his top priority.

_:...I don't care. I don't care, I don't care! I don't care what he wants, I refuse!

Looking up from the ground with fire in my eyes I realize the man is gone. I turned at the sudden sound of a door, Ivan rushing outside.

Ivan: _, what's wrong? I heard yelling.

The mere sight of him was enough to break me, collapsing to my knees.

Ivan: _!

_: You...you'll let me stay, right?

Ivan: What?

_: You'll do as you promised and never let me leave, right?

Ivan: What are you saying? What happened?

_: Please!

I begged, grabbing a hold of his pant leg.

I can't ever see that man again...I'll live here forever as these vampires' slave if I must! Even that is a better fate than meeting with that man.

_: You'll let me stay, right?

Ivan knelt down beside me, brow scrunched with worry and confusion.

Ivan: Don't worry, you aren't going anywhere.

A small smile crept on my lips. Simple words I would loathe in the past have now become my sanctuary. A lone tear snaked its way down my skin before dropping, landing on a petal.
