Chapter7: A Forgotten Shoe

*Jake Parkers*

"Seriously, dude?" Garret says throwing his bag in his seat. "Flappy bird?"

"Yeah, give up." Carter says. "You suck."

I frown. "I got a new high score." I say showing them my phone. Garret laughs while Carter shakes his head shamefully.

"Eleven?"

"Yeah. It took me forever to beat seven but I did it." I say proudly, ignoring the looks they're giving me.

Whatever. I'm a winner and I know it.

Coach congratulates us again for our win against Jefferson and promises next time we play them, we'll play dirty too. But the saying 'two wrongs don't make a right' sticks in my head. If we play just as harsh and gruesome as them, aren't we no better? Aren't we sinking to their level?

I don't want to be known as that team.

I don't want other people from schools saying things like, 'ah, damn. We have to play that team'. I'm in this for the sake of getting better and having fun, not making enemies.

"Alright, ladies." Coach says. "We'll be home in a few hours so get some rest. I'm proud."

I find myself in a conversation with Garret about the nasty punch Rebecca took from Jessica when I notice Carter's phone vibrates with a text message.

But he's asleep, not answering it. I'm tempted -very- to find out who sent him that text and I have a gut feeling I know who.

His phone is just sitting right there. I could quickly grab it, read who sent it, and set it back.

Just stop thinking about it. It's Carter's buisness, not yours.

But it would be so easy. He wouldn't even know.

Grabbing his phone, I greedily turn it on.

"What are you doing?" Garret asks with confusion as he looks over my shoulder.

Message from Knight in Shining Armor 7:13 - You forgot your shirt in my room last night. I'll bring it over later.

I stare at the text, not sure what to think of it. His shirt was in her room? Did he spend the night in her room? Why was it off? What were they doing?

I glance over at Garret who looks disappointed. "Looking at a bro's text from a girl is low, dude."

I ignore his statement because it's true. Very true. But that's not important right now. I need to know why he was in her room last night without a shirt on. I lean back in my seat. "Did Carter sleep in his room last night?"

Garret frowns. "No, he crashed at Jessica's. Why?"

"Did he come back without a shirt?"

Garret thinks about it for a second before nodding slowly. "Yeah, he didn't have a shirt on. He came back with a Spider-Man blanket wrapped around him."

I frown. "Why was he over there?"

He shrugs. "I'm not sure. He said he had to tell her something important."

I wonder what that was?

For the rest of the ride, I quiz over this simple text.

So many things run through my head, different scenarios of why his shirt was left in her room. He could have just taken it off because he got hot while sleeping. Or he could have taken it off because she asked him to. She could have pulled it off herself.
