**Alex’s POV**

I watch the Hufflepuff boy walk away, feeling numb.

“Alex, you’re going home for Christmas, right?” Scarlett asks quietly. I shake my head.

“You are now,” she announces, grabbing my arm and dragging me out.

“Where are we going?” I ask.

“To see McGonagall,” Scarlett replies, “to book you a seat home.”

I don’t argue. I don’t think I want to stay here over Christmas. I hear a noise behind me and jump, but it’s only Fred and George marching Jace along after us.

Scarlett knocks on McGonagall’s door and we wait.

“Come in.”

The five of us push into her office.

“What’ve you done now?” she sighs.

“Nothing, professor,” Scarlett says, “we’re signing Alex and Jace up for seats home for Christmas.”

McGonagall observes us over her glasses.

“News does spread quickly in this school, doesn’t it?” she asks, “alright, I’ll book you on.”

“Thank you, professor,” I smile, relieved. She nods once and we back out.

“Have a good Christmas,” Carma says, giving me a hug, “you too, Jace.”

“Bye everyone!” I call, climbing into a carriage with Jace.

“Are you scared?” he asks me as the carriage pulls away.

“Scared?” I force a laugh, “why would I be scared?”

Jace smiles at me.

“We’ll be fine,” he says, “we’re a match for Slytherin’s heir, right?”

“Duh, we’re Gryffindors!” I say, “where dwell the brave at heart!”

“Their daring, nerve and chivalry set Gryffindors apart!” we finish together, laughing.

“We’re going to be fine,” Jace chuckles. I nod in agreement, secretly hoping that’s true.

When we come back from Christmas holidays the castle seems more cheerful. Our friends great us at the station.
