“I’m paying,” Briana announced, loud and clear, as I kept staring at my cup of coffee.

“Okay,” I said quietly, and I knew what was coming next.

“Thank you,” She smiled politely at the waitress, and leaned over the table as soon as we were out of her sight. “Alright, what the hell is going on? First you skip work, then you don’t even fight me about who’s paying our drinks.”

I looked up at her with sad eyes, silently begging her to drop it but she just shook her head. “I’m not giving up until you tell me. Does it have anything to do with Liam?”

I shivered at the mention of his name; of course he wasn’t the reason I was in a shitty mood, but I couldn’t help but remember our ‘walk’ on Friday. Only two days have passed, and it already felt like it’s been years. For a number of reasons, that’s for sure.

“No, it doesn’t,” I said in a bored tone, staring at my cup again. “It’s just that… I’m poor.”

At my words, Briana laughed and sat back in her chair. She’s had this conversation with me too many times. “Sally, you’re not poor. Do you even know what being poor means? Come on, you-”

“It means,” I interrupted her, “It means... it’s when a person doesn’t have a job.”

She blinked at me a few times, looking like she was worried for my mental health. Nothing new there. “Well I guess half of our school is poor, then?” She tried joking, but ended up frowning. “And you have a job, anyway.”

She looked up at me again as I breathed out a bitter laugh, “That’s the thing,” I sighed, “I don’t.”

Bri slowly left the menu on the table, a cautious look in her eyes this time. “What do you mean?” She asked just as slowly, crossing her arms on the table in front of her. I guess this is what going to a shrink looks like.

“Jesse called me on Saturday,” I started and Briana immediately raised her eyebrows. “He said someone offered to work for a lower salary, during the weekends too, so I’m out.”

“He called you while you weren’t even working?” She almost exclaimed, earning a few stares from the nearest people to us. I sighed again; getting attention was the thing I needed least.

“Yeah, but that’s not the point,” I said, a little pissed off. Already. “It’s actually better that he called me when I wasn’t there, I would have broken his nose.”

"I would have broken his nose either way," She nodded firmly, but then gave me an apologetic smile, “That is just… so unfair.”

“I know,” I sighed as I looked at my cup again. So pretty. "I feel like a virgin whose boyfriend dumped her for a damned prostitute."

Briana bit her lip, obviously trying not to laugh in such an inconvenient moment . “What are you gonna do now?”

“What can I do?” I asked back, “I need to find a job. I’m poor.”

“Stop saying that,” She scowled. “Maybe… maybe I can talk to my boss?”

The idea of working in an animal shelter wasn’t so appealing to me, no matter how much I loved animals. “But it’s far from the campus. And my house.”

“That’s the smallest problem, we’ll go together all the time.” Briana smiled, but I decided to shake my head.

“Nah… thanks though. But seriously, I can barely handle people, much less animals.”
