that same day, lilah's pov;

I walked into the cafe and saw Ashton sitting at a table waiting for me. So cute, it looks like he already ordered me a coffee, I smiled at him and waved. He got up from the table, waved back at me then motioned me over. I walked over and he pulled out the chair for me to sit down, I smiled again.

"Hey, you look great!" He said with a smile as I sat down, he went over to return to his seat. "I just ordered you a coffee for right now if that's okay, I didn't know what you were in the mood for food wise so I'll leave that up to you." He laughed lightly.
"No it's perfect! Thank you. Are you eating?"
"I am, just wanted to wait for you." I smiled.
"Okay, well yeah let's go ahead and order." I said as I took a sip of my coffee, it was perfect and just the way I like it too, I wonder how he knew. The waitress walked by us and we were able to order. Ashton got a turkey and cheese wrap, I ordered a chicken quesadilla. Hopefully he lets me get a bite of his cause it sounded good.
"Alrighty so first things first though, what did you want to talk to me about?" He asked.
"Would you want to wait until we got our food? I kind of want that to be the last thing we talk about if that's okay." He gave me a puzzling look. "It's nothing bad I promise."
"Okay, well sure yeah we can wait. So how has your day been so far?"
"It's been alright, really dreading my class here in a few hours and I woke up with sort of a headache from last night."
"Yeah I sorta did too, it was a great party though, I had fun. Man Sydney is something else though, that girl can really drink." He told me. "And it doesn't help that Ethan's a heavy drinker too so them together is like the ultimate mix."
"Oh definitely, yeah she can really hold it down. Sometimes I want to get on her level but other times I'm like, yeahh better not." We both laughed. "So how did you meet Ethan?" I asked.
"He's good friends with Tyler. They met through a class they have together and he introduced him to the rest of us. It was just a coincidence that he was dating your friend." He smiled.
"Cool cool, yeah they're really cute together and their personalities just fit so well."
"I agree yeah. Ethan's a cool guy, he's obviously not one of my good friends just yet but he's cool and his friends are pretty cool so that's good."
"Yeah definitely. The more the merrier." He laughed. Our food finally came about 10 minutes later and we began eating. "Is your food good?" I asked. He nodded, smiled and then shifted his plate over to me.
"Yeah, you want to try it? You know you want a bite." He smirked, I smirked back before accepting. I did the same with my plate so he could try mine. "Yeah, yours is good too."
"Mhm, I like that wrap, it's got what? Tomato, lettuce, cheese, turkey and mayo?"
"Yeah, basic but good." I laughed and nodded. "They gave you pico and sour cream?"
"They sure did, I kind of wish I had some guacamole but I'll be alright."
"Are you sure? I can ask for you."
"No, it's fine." He gave me an eager look. "Yeah, it's fine Ash." I giggled.
"Alright, if you insist." He smiled. "So now can we get to the part of conversation?"
"Sure, if you insist." I stuck my tongue out at him and tucked my hair behind my ears to prepare myself. "So you remember Cate right? The girl I was telling you about?"
"Yeah, your like sort've ex?" I laughed.
"Yeah, sort've. So any-who so after you encouraged me to go and talk to her, we met up at our old hangout spot on the hill in the pavilion. It wasn't like a heated conversation but it wasn't pleasant either. She basically said that she's sorry for how our talk went at the party, she did it out of spite and whatever she said was partly true."
"What'd she say at the party?"
"She said she didn't want to be on the break anymore and I called bs right away during it because I knew she was only saying that cause I showed up with you."
"So she was jealous then?"
"Yeah. She admitted she was, that it was the whole reason she was sorry pretty much but she said it wasn't like she doesn't still have feelings for me, she just can't be with me right now. So the break was still going to be a thing even if I had taken her back."
"She just wanted to know that you were still hers."
"Exactly. I got on her about how it was leading me on in a way and I couldn't believe she even had that idea in her head to begin with."
"Right."
"So when she asked me if I'd be willing to wait, I told her no. I told her that it wasn't the reason I came, I wasn't coming with the intention of us getting together or making things work. I told her I wasn't interested anymore."
"And you aren't right?"
"I mean I still care about her, she's still a good friend of mine but no I have no interest in pursuing whatever that was."
"Right, okay. So how did she take it?"
"Not well but well at the same time, she started tearing up and I really didn't want her to cry seriously but I'm sure it hurt her feelings. She just said that she wanted what was best for me and would make me happy, that she wouldn't get in the way of that."
"Aw."
"Yeah, it was a lot. So speeding up to today, her brother texted Sydney and I this morning. Sydney stayed over last night cause she was too drunk to walk back home and Ethan was already sleeping, blah blah."
"Right, right."
"So he texted us this morning and said that Cate's not doing well at all really and that he thinks we should give her a call or text to just talk to her, send our regards I guess."
"Okay."
"And he texted Sydney something separate and said if she wanted to come and see her, he'd be willing to come and pick her up."
"So Cate went home?"
"That's what I'm assuming yes."
"Is she going to go then?"
"No, she doesn't want to. That same day I talked to Cate, Sydney had also talked to her and they got into an argument and so on so Sydney isn't up to going and seeing her right now."
"That's kind of messed up."
"Yeah, it's a bit childish actually. Cate's her best friend and if her brother is now texting us that she's not in a good place, we should be there for her."
"Totally. Wait, so you're going to see her?"
"Yeah, Caspar's coming to get me after my class is over."
"Lily, I don't know how I feel about that."
"What do you mean?"
"I just- you with your sort've ex? For how long?"
"Tonight and tomorrow night, he'll bring me back in the morning after."
"Oh." He had kind of a sad face on.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing. I just-"
"You just what?"
"I just, what if you end up giving in or something? You guys hook up again or you end up thinking that maybe you still want her?"
"That won't happen Ash."
"You don't know that though."
"I do. I'm going for one thing and one thing only, to make sure Cate's okay and is settled in if she's really staying home. She doesn't even know I'm coming, Caspar hasn't told her."
"Okay."
"It'll be alright okay? Don't worry, I know what I'm getting myself into and I don't want anything more."
"I know you can take care of yourself, I just worry you know? I don't want you to start feeling down for whatever reason or just I don't know."
"I know, I know."
