*Note: This is based off an old and discontinued story that had its outline scrapped and reworked to fit the prompts for the ONC. Essentially, a new book for this competition. Only the core concept, title and the protagonist's name are kept the same.* ----- A ribbon, a hair-clip, a pen, a notebook and a radio, held in the arms of a sixteen year old girl... ... It's been four hundred of years since The Rot ravaged the world and sent people downward with its decaying touch, four hundred years since humanity has inhaled even a breath of fresh air and twenty years since the first fifth-generation child was born in the shelters deep underground. And now, beneath the poisoned earth at the edge of the world, only six of them remain living in the last surviving shelter, the last surviving Lifelight illuminating a darkened board. For the rest were claimed by The Rot. Protected at all costs, older generations shields the worst of the consequences, the worst of the panic, but truth cannot be hidden forever. With increasing tensions and increasing crime, it becomes clear that there are only two outcomes: to die in strife or to die in silence. That is, until an inexplicable hope presents itself in the form of a radio transmission originating from the single most uninhabitable place on Earth, the surface. But it's too late, too late for most, other than the most protected, the youngest, the fifth generation. The waiting game is over and now it's a race against time. Before The Rot reaches them, before they run out of supplies, the handful of survivors must reach out and find the source of the transmission. From this, there are only two possible results: death or a secured future. *Cover done by the amazing @toruinagod*

She survived the end. But it's only the beginning. Ever thought escaping Earth meant survival. Instead, it meant sacrifice. She lost her parents, her sister, and the two boys she loves-left behind to an uncertain fate. Now, on a distant planet she never asked to call home, Ever reunites with the brother she thought was dead. But this new world is not the refuge it promised to be. Her sister's haunting last words echo in her mind: "Your friends may be your foes, and your foes may be your only chance for survival." With her memories fractured by reimaging, Ever struggles to tell truth from illusion, ally from enemy-even within herself. As a genetically modified human, she carries a dangerous secret: she may be the only woman capable of creating life. To Environettix, the ruthless corporation pulling the strings, that makes her their most valuable-and most vulnerable-target. And she isn't the only one. The other Mods brought from Earth are caught in the same web of lies, their very existence exploited for an agenda darker than they ever imagined. But the planet itself holds secrets of its own. And Ever is beginning to realize a chilling truth: they don't belong here. And when something doesn't belong, it's only a matter of time before it's erased. *This is Book 2 in The Dissonance Series

The novel is part sci-fi, love story and autobiography. Most of the settings take place in the year 2017 where a person loses touch with reality. Based on the events that are happening in a coincidental pattern, Joseph has to figure out what is going on before it's too late and he loses his mind. Does he live in some sort of Matrix, or is stuck between Heaven and Hell, or is followed by the NSA, or is something else causing the unusual events? The situation is further complicated by thoughts and feelings for the love of his life. Joseph eventually solves the puzzle of what is going on and why has all this happened. As a result, he is able to see the world from different perspectives than ever before, and is able to strip away all the endless filters that many entities such governments and corporations place in front of people's eyes to keep them silent. The novel consists of two separate parts that are different but related to each other. In the second part, many current social, political and economic events are discussed, including the relationship between Artificial Intelligence and the deep state government, and the consequences of "business as usual" actions of our society. "We've been called different names throughout history," he tells me. "Titans, Gods, guardian angels, superheroes..." He lists them as he reads my face, testing my reactions to them. "We have been worshiped as creators, divine beings, though that isn't what we are. We are saviors, Emma." "Saviors of what?" * * * Emma Belmonte is seventeen, and her life is already over. She's been planning it for months, wondering how best to leave the world with a bang. Nine stories; one hundred-and-two feet - a death drop by all standards. She jumps from the hotel roof with the anticipation that her pain will be over in an instant, but she emerges a survivor of the impossible. And, upon waking, becomes an embodiment of the impossible as well. Never again will she take advantage of her own mortality. Never again will she underestimate what being alive has to give her. Emma Belmonte is seventeen, and she will always be. - - - - - - SENTINEL is a Science Fiction novel that touches on the philosophy that humanity is a double-edged sword, neither good nor bad. It is an adventure of discovery and awakening, heroes and villains, battles lost and won. All of which inevitably lead to the violent ending of human civilization. In other words, apocalypse is coming. With an ancient superhuman society at your back and numerous weapons in your arsenal, is it still possible to defend humanity from itself? This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, businesses, places, events and incidents are either the products of the author's imagination or used in a fictitious manner. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental. #83 in Science Fiction, 24/07/2016

His last message reaches headquarters, but it's distorted. He also didn't have time to write down what he sent. I guess it's a mystery...? *Disclaimer* This is strictly for entertainment purposes. There are no weird creatures in Antarctica! At least not that we know of.
