(Carlton House, the following morning. SERVANT #1 cautiously knocks on the bedchamber of the PRINCE OF WALES.)

SERVANT #1

Your Royal Highness.

(Pause. Slightly louder)

Your Royal Highness!

(THE PRINCE OF WALES stirs and rolls over, squinting in the sunlight. SERVANT #1 enters with a tray of tea.)

SERVANT #1

Forgive me, sir, but...

PRINCE OF WALES

What is the hour?

SERVANT #1

8 o'clock, sir.

PRINCE OF WALES

What, in the morning?

SERVANT #1

Yes, sir.

PRINCE OF WALES

Why have you woken me so early? I have nothing scheduled before the opera at 1.

SERVANT #1

Forgive me, sir, but Your Royal Highness is hosting a breakfast for the Whigs at 9.

PRINCE OF WALES

Damn me, I completely forgot.

(Sits up, looking next to him in bed)

Where is...

SERVANT #1

Your guest took leave of Carlton earlier this morning, sir.

PRINCE OF WALES

Ah. Did she say where she was headed?

SERVANT #1

I believe it was her husband's house, sir.

PRINCE OF WALES

Ah, very well. Fetch me my red velvet jacket, buff satin waistcoat and breeches, and black satin shoes with the gold buckles.

SERVANT #1

Very good, sir. And which wig would Your Royal Highness prefer?

PRINCE OF WALES

None, I shall have my hair frizzed and powdered.

(Beat)

Are those my only engagements today?

SERVANT #1

They are the only ones of which Your Royal Highness has informed us.

PRINCE OF WALES

Oh, very good. Go on.

(SERVANT #1 exits. The PRINCE OF WALES groans from his hangover and lies back down. Cut to SCENE VI).
