The Angel In His Heart

Of the all the good memories her father had blessed her with, the one that always came to mind first was the calk stained sidewalks that laid in front of the Roadway Inn. The motel always looked to be in complete ruin. The brick structure was cracking beneath its concrete base and exterior walls were slowly being consumed by tree vines that snaked up the sides. The gravel parking lot was laced with sharp rocks, which continuously made playing outside difficult; however, Y/N managed to entertain herself on the old, rusty swing set that was in the small grassy area near the front lobby.

Unfortunately, the inside was no better. Each room smelled of the rotting carpet and musty furniture. The curtains presented a murky brown that matched the bed sheet. To this day she still couldn't tell if they were made to be that color, or they just hadn't been washed regularly by the staff. The worst was the creaky air conditioner that roared in the middle of the night. It would always spook her from her sleep causing her to soon suffer from a night of continuous nightmares. She never once got a good night's rest in that dinky motel, but something about it made her heart swell with tremendous joy.

It was true. The motel had seen better days. However, it wasn't the nasty rooms nor the horrible room service that captured her fancy.

It was the sidewalk.

The one right by the hotel parking lot was painted in mostly purple calk; her absolute favorite color. The other ten percent was a tribute to her father. It was stained green; a color that reminded her of his eyes. Shapes, typically butterflies, covered the concrete. Beside them were her and her father initials, marking their place on the earth, until, at last, the rain washed it all away, only for it to be decorated in a completely different way the next time Y/N came around.

She loved drawing on that sidewalk, but what she looked forward to, even more, was her father's biking lessons.

Though the hotel was pretty much dead, even in the high of the tourist season, there were still bikes for rent in the main lobby. The manager would rent them for an expenses price. His ugly, wrinkled face grinning with greed whenever he knew he had just screwed someone over. Her father, however, took the blow with a smile, paying the man's price with no regret. If it made his little girl happy, he was willing to spare any expense.

Of course, she made sure that he picked the purple one. The one hidden in the back, with the sparkly pink streamers on the handles. Her eyes sparkled when she saw it. Amazed at its beauty, even though, it had its dents and weird quirks. The front tire was tightened to the left, making it hard to steer right. The brakes were also an issue, in the fact that, there were no brakes. She bumped into everyone and everything, but that didn't stop for from getting back up and continuing on her journey.

She would never forget the first time she had rode it without the help of the training wheels.

Her father stood by her, holding onto the seat for dear life. He was even more nervous then she was. She could tell by the way his hands gripped her side. He didn't want to let her go, even if it was just down the road, where her uncle stood waiting to catch her.

Ignoring her father's anxieties, she placed her feet on the petals, giving him all of her trust. He wouldn't let her fall. She believed that with all of her heart. And if it were to happen, her uncle would be there to catch her.

With the sound of her father's soft voice asking her, "are you ready," she felt the rush of what she thought was adrenaline course through her body. She was excited and nervous all at the same time and it mixed with her untapped power flowing in her blood.

She answers his question with the simple nod of her head and they took off together down the sidewalk. She first concentrates on peddling, her tiny leg pumping with all her might. With the help of her father pushing, she is able to pick up speed rather quickly. The cool breeze blew in her face and through her hair and through what felt like her imaginary wings, as she continued to fly down the sidewalk. The patterns and shapes she had traced on the ground sipped pass her in colorful blobs. It was the first taste of freedom that a five year old was able to experience and she loved every moment of it. So much so, that she didn't even realize that her father had let go, watching her take a leap of faith down the beaten path of the sidewalk.

"You can let go now, daddy," she whispered to the wind.

You can let go now...

*-*

She tried to take the memory for what it pictured. A father teaching his daughter how to ride a bike. Sweet and simple. Loving and beautiful. Normal and ordinary. But, nothing involving her family was ever conventional.

Every bone in her body fought it, telling her to see reason. However, she could not deny that she felt it in her blood. Even back then, at the young age of five years old, she sensed that there was something deep inside of her. Something otherworldly, magical, and pure.

It also happened to be something Sam and Ruby wanted and often used.

A desire that burned in the way they looked at her. A longing that made her fear what they were planned behind her back. A yearning that motivated them to hold her captive for ten long years.

With the last memory of her father still permanently locked behind the dimmed color of her eyes, she blew out each one of her birthday candles; all the way up to number fifteen. With each burned out wick, she made her mark on her wall, counting down each bitter day after the next. Slowly, but surely she became a strong, independent, young woman. The fighter that her father taught her to be and the monster her uncle made her to be. Still, his teachings could never ease the pain of her losses. Thus, she could only seek comfort in her childhood memories when everything else seemed to fail her. The memory of being stolen away from her father just ten long years ago was endlessly locked in her nightmares and dreams alike. Short, vivid images of her leaving a man she swore to protect since the day she was put on this earth, and thrown into a new world of blood and murder. She was robbed of her angel like innocence, completely stripped away, until only her hidden powers remained.

She was no longer a person, nor a human when she didn't put in the effort to think about him. When he was erased, she would become a weapon that was used at the disposal of both Sam and Ruby; the two people she had come to know as her merciless guardians.

She hated every moment of it, but she could not stop herself. She had become that very thing her father gave up his life to destroy. How he was ever going to forgive her, she didn't know, nor did she experiment with the possibility that he would spare her, for she knew, she had to be stopped.

So, she proceeded to starch out the last mark on her wall, stepping back to observers her work for the final time. The gray barriers that enclosed her were scarred with her anger, patience, and blood. She circled the room, as she envisioned many of her failed attempts to escape her living hell. Once when she was six, again when she was ten, and finally, her last effort, at the age of fourteen. She came out unsuccessful after each one of them, losing a bit of hope every time.

Yet, she never gave up on him.

Her father, whom she knew was searching heaven and earth to find her and bring her home. She had no fear that her father had abandoned her. The only fear that did remain in her heart was the dread of the moment when she would have to watch her father realize that the little girl he once knew was gone and replaced by a monster that once held his brother.

For that very moment was right now.

"Y/N?"

His voice was so different from what she remembered. The five-year-old that was still buried somewhere trapped inside her recalled a much softer tone. A raspy vibration that could cure all of her problems with the simple call of her name. However, now, it sounds detached and worn.

She could tell in that exact moment, that just like the Roadway Inn, the years had not been kind to him.

Emerging from the darkness, he stood in the light. She could now finally see his image clearly; a cite that almost had her on the floor with grief. He didn't look any different, except for some unnatural aging around his eyes. He still stood tall, acting as if he wasn't entirely broken inside. His angel blade was pressed tight in the palm of his right hand. His body told her that he was ready, but his eyes screamed something different.

He didn't want to hurt her, but the five-year-old girl that once liked to hide in closets was now too far lost. He couldn't save her, no matter how much he wanted to try. Sam and Ruby's influence had consumed her fully, turning her into the most beautiful dark angel that he had ever seen before. She was the product of a spark created by careless love that lasted between the striking angel by the name of Anna and a handsome hunter by the name of Dean. Together they made her. The flame that was lit by that one spark; a fling he never once regretted. Even in this very moment, even after all the things Castiel had told him she had done, he never once lamented his angel.

Maybe he should have told her sooner. Maybe then this twist of fate wouldn't have ever happened. Maybe then he could have his baby girl back. But, nothing he planned ever worked out in the end.

She gives him a look of understanding as her eyes lift from his weapon. He had come to kill her and she was grateful for it. The pain of what she had become was a fate worse than death. The mercy of a blade was a Godsend, even if her father was made to be the executioner.

"Dad," she speaks tenderly. She knew she only had a few minutes alone with him before the doors were blown from the hinges and Sam, or should she say Lucifer, would enter the equation. "You have to do it."

It's the first time in ten years he's heard her voice. Like his, it was different from what he remembered. It wasn't young or small, but strong and determined. It was enough to break his heart all over again. The memories of her last words echoing in his mind like a broken record. That night in the hotel haunted him behind his eyelids. He's since never forgot her last 'I love you," to him.

"No," he speaks firmly, lowering his knife in surrender. "I've just found you. I'm not letting you go again."

Shaking her head, the tears continue to threaten their arrival in her eyes. He of all people had to understand. She didn't want to live like this anymore. She didn't deserve it and neither did he.

"Please, dad," she begged, daring herself to step closer to him. "I know now that I was put on this earth to destroy Lilith, but in the process, I've let Lucifer out. I let him take Sam. I've let him destroy families. But, worse of all, I let him destroy me."

"No," he repeats, his breath becoming heavier. "I can't."

"I'm not her anymore, dad. I'm not that little girl that came running out of the closet to protect you. I'm not that girl you remember. I'm not your daughter anymore. I'm a monster and you're a hunter. You know what you have to do," she states calmly, watching him break at her words. It pained her to say them, but it had to be done. She needed to convince him.

"You're not a monster," he mumbles under his breath, but she is still able to hear it.

"Dad, I've hurt people. Innocent people..."

"That's not your fault," he tries to argue, but he knows deep down he's not going to win.

"Please, dad," she pleads, her tears finally spilling out of her eyes. "Don't let me hurt you too."

She had only seen him cry once before. She was four years old at the time. Her tiny feet tapped against the floor as she approached his bed. She struggled a bit as she made her way up, crawling over to her father. A weak smile crossed his lips upon seeing her. He tried, right then and there, to brush his tears away, but she saw them anyway. She put her tiny thumbs to use, attempting to wipe the rest of them away, before planting a kiss on his forehead. Within an instant, it was as if he was cured. His sadness had just vanished from his eyes and a look of happiness spread across his face.

She would give anything to be able to use that trick now.

The excruciating pain of the knife entering her body left her fighting for breath on the floor. She wasn't quite panicking, but she wasn't calm either. Instead, she was paralyzed. Her eyes desperately trying to focus one thing as her world continues to spin in circles. Finally, they landed on something. Her father. His face soaked with tears as he looked down at her in sorrow. He looked just the same as when she was four, only his tears were for her and not for another fallen friend.

It took her body a long time to register his actions. However, that didn't stop the rush of anxiety from entering her blood. She cried out for him, wanting him closer. He didn't hesitate to answer her call, placing his hands at the sides of her face.

"I'm here baby girl," he cries, trying his best to compose himself for her.

She smiles at him, despite everything. He had granted her wish. Her soul would be free soon.

Her vessel was shaking vigorously and her once white wings laid dead and blacken beneath her. But, what was even worse, was the feeling of her body growing colder and colder underneath his fingertips; however, his heart denied the evidence shown in front of him. He may have gathered the strength to plunge the blade into her frail body, but letting her go was a much harder battle.

"Dad, do you remember when you first took me bike riding without the training wheels," she asks, laying her hand on top of his, craving his warmth.

Laughing a bit, his lips form a fitted line. "Yeah. You were my brave little girl," he answers; his fingers trembled as they played with her soft hair. It held a distraction, away from her pooling blood.

"Do you remember what I said to you," she asks next, her voice getting weaker with each passing breath.

Dean shakes his head no, tears still streaming down his face as he does so.

"I said, you can let go now, daddy," she whispers with one last pure smile. The breath leaves her at that moment, and her eyes permanently close in an eternal sleep.

You can let go now...
