As the movie finishes, I look up to Alex and grin, "I can't believe that was your choice of movie."

"What's so bad about it? It's a good film."

"It was such a teen romance, Alex. Honestly, aren't you supposed to be manly or something?"

"It has plenty of action too, and I like it to contrast how they depict werewolves compared to the real thing." He tries to make up an excuse.

"Sure, sure. But, I've always known that you're secretly a hopeless romantic. No need to hide it from me." I begin to stand up, throwing his arm off my shoulders.

"Oh, Vi, just shut up."

"Nah, I like talking."

Alex opens his mouth, about to reply when Melissa walks past the door holding a basket of clothing, "Alex, I didn't even see you this morning! How'd you sleep, dear?"

"Fine, Mum," Alex replies.

"How about you, Violet?"

"Alright," I say, recalling the strange dream I'd had.

"Oh, and Alex, I forgot to ask, who was that girl who dropped in? Whilst you were sick? I didn't get to talk to her. I was busy helping your dad with preparation for the ceremony."

"Who?" He asks, "You mean Violet?"

"No, the blonde-haired one. With the green eyes." She replies.

"Oh, her. She's just a friend mum, from town."

"Okay, well, it's good that you're making a few friends." Melissa smiles, "Well, I have to go sort out the laundry. Hope you kids have fun."

"So, who was she?" I question as Melissa walks away.

"Who?" Alex asks once again, as stupid as always.

"The girl?"

"Oh, just a friend."

"I already heard that but who?"

"Are you jealous?" He laughs, "You are, aren't you?"

"I am not! But when do you even meet people who I don't know."

He hesitates, tensing up but soon relaxes, "At the book club."

"Ah, so she was one of your nerd friends."

"I am not a nerd. Anyway, now that the movie is over, I really do need to at least do some math work." He says, and then turns on those blasted puppy dog eyes, "Speaking of which, can you help me?"

I sigh, "Fine."

I follow him upstairs to his room, and sit down on his bed next to him, as he does his math work on his lap. After he asks me for help with every single question, 23 questions straight, I ask, "How do you find this so hard?"

"How do you find spelling so hard?"

"Touché."

We complete a few more questions, and then Alex's phone begins to ring, he picks it up, and walks across the room. The volume is so low that I can't understand what the other person is saying. But I can hear Alex, loud and clear.

There are no greetings as Alex nods to whatever the person is saying, and then replies, "Do you really think she is ready?" What on Earth is he saying?

A few more words are spoken on the other end, and then Alex says, "I guess so, but what if we are assuming things wrong?"

He listens for a minute, "I know, she definitely seems to be on our side, but I could be wrong. She could be too loyal to them, after all." Okay, they seem to be up to something.

As the other person speaks, Alex lets out a nervous laugh, "I guess I can do that, but I'll have to convince her first."

They continue on for a while, as Alex is silent, and then he eventually just replies, "Okay, bye." Then he hangs up the phone, puts it down and turns back to face me. "Sorry 'bout that."

"Who was it?"

"Just a 'nerd' friend." He replies. I guess they were just talking about some really strange book.

"Your book sounds incredibly dodgy."

"Huh?"

"The one you were talking about," I reply.

"Oh, right. Oh, by the way, do you want to come to my book club? A few of them are interested in meeting you."

"No thanks, I'm not nerdy enough."

"You could still come to town, and hang out."

"Father would never allow that."

"You aren't a pup anymore. And, if I'm nearby he might allow it."

"I doubt it, but go ahead and call him." I don't particularly want to go, but I'm curious to see if father will permit it, as he never has in the past. At least, not for a few years, and Beta was there, then.

Alex dials the number, and the phone rings, once, then twice. I begin to believe that father won't pick up, that is, until I hear an icy, "Hello?"

"Alpha. I wanted to ask permission if Violet could come to town with me this afternoon."

"That's very dangerous." I smile, knowing that I've won, but then he continues, "But I guess I have to let her go eventually, and now is no better time than any other. So, as long as you're around, I guess it is fine."

"Thank you."

"No problem. I will see you tomorrow at the meeting to discuss the blood moon. In case I don't see you until then, Violet, you need to be there too. 5 pm sharp."

"Yes, father."

My father abruptly hangs up, and Alex puts his phone away in his pocket, "See, I told you that he would."

"I guess so."

"Anyway, let's go."

"Don't you have to do your math?" I ask, trying to stall him, as I really don't enjoy going into town.

"We're almost done. I'll do the rest when we get back." He stands up, "Come on, let's go."

I stand up, and follow him outside, as Melissa says, "Oh, Alex, going to your book club? See you when you get back, dinner is green peppercorn veal. You can come over for dinner, if you want, Violet."

"Ooh, yes please." I love veal.

We get into his car, and I say, "I hate cars, why can't we still use horse carriages?" I look out the passenger side window, slightly unnerved by how fast the ground moves past us.

"It's because they're so slow."

"Well, why can't we run to town?"

"There are a few humans there, delivering stuff or just stopping by, what do you think they'd think if they saw random wolves run into town."

"Good point," I admit, and continue to watch the ground speed past. Alex doesn't talk, he seems slightly distracted, although he could be just trying to concentrate on the road.

Suddenly, he drives off the road, into a small rest spot that is built for travellers. It's completely empty.

"What's wrong?" I notice a small building, "Do you need the restroom?" I ask as he unbuckles his seatbelt.

He suddenly reaches over the gear stick and puts his hand over my mouth. It's hard to breathe, I reach up to pull his hand away, my eyes glancing towards him, pleading the questions I can't speak.

I can't see his other hand, but I hear a box open, and something slide out. What on earth is going on? Is someone here to hurt us, do we need to be quiet or something?

"Vi, I'm so sorry." His words are the last thing I hear as I feel the needle go into my arm. But why...?
