"Come on Gray wake up! You're going to be late for school!" My mom yells from the bottom of the stairs. I roll out of bed and drag my feet to the bathroom to take a shower. After almost 30 minutes I decide to stop wasting water and get out. While my curling iron is heating up I get dressed into a sea green shirt, black pants, a rose gold watch, and sea green sandals.
I curl my hair and apply light makeup. Once I decide that I look okay I go downstairs.
"Took you long enough." My mom jokes as she hands me a granola bar. She kisses my cheek and I grab my bag and phone then walk out of the house. One of my two best friends, Lexi, is waiting for me in the driveway.
"Heyyyyyyy Grayyyyyyy!" She says when I get in her car, a 2014 Toyota Camry.
"Heyyyyyyyyyyyy Lexiiiiiiiiiii!" I mock her and we both laugh. "Where's Sare?" I ask her, wondering where our other friend, Sarah is.
"She told me to get you first because she was running late." Lexi explains as she backs out of the driveway.
"Poor Sarah." I say and she sticks out her bottom lip and we start laughing again.
"How's Matt?" She asks, referring to my soon to be ex boyfriend.
"Still a cheating jerk." I reply. I found out last week that he was cheating on me with some girl he met at college. He's a freshman in college and I'm a junior in high school, but we started dating two years ago when he was a junior and I was a freshman.
"I'm so sorry. Are you going to break up with him today?" She asks as we pull into Sarah's driveway.
"Yeah. I asked him to get me from practice today so you don't have to drive me home." I say as Sarah gets in the back seat. Lexi immediately starts driving when she closes the door so we aren't late.
"Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Gray, heyyyyyyyy Lexi." She says. "Are we talking about a certain slug named Matt?" She asks and I can't help but smile at her attempt to cheer me up.
"A cheating slug that's about to be a single cheating slug." I say and fight back the tears. I cried for two days straight and Lexi and Sarah were right by me the whole time. They are truly the best friends I could ever ask for.
"Go Gray! Make sure you tell him off good, for us." Lexi says
"What about you Sare? How's progress with Andy going?" Sarah has a crush on Andy, the halfback on the football team. They obviously like each other but they are both to shy to say anything.
"Same as usual. He flirts with me, I flirt with him." She sighs and I look at Lexi out of the corner of my eye. We've been formulating a plan to get them together since we found out that she liked him.
"I think he needs to grow a pair and just ask you out already. The suspense is killing me." Lexi says and Sarah reaches up and smacks her arm lightly.
"Honestly I wish he would too." Sarah says as we pull into the school parking lot and get out. Half the football team walks up to us.
"Are you girls going to share the field today or are you going to take it over like you did all last week?" James, the quarterback and team captain asks.
"It depends on if you guys are nice to us. If I remember correctly, last week our locker room smelled like sweaty football jerseys." I say. I am the captain of the cheerleading team that Lexi and Sarah are also on.
"Okay Princess. You hear that boys? Play nice." He says, addressing the football team. Melody, one of the freshman cheerleaders walks up to us.
"Coach Gordon wants Gray and James to meet him in his office right now." She says
"Thank you." I say and I nod at her. She walks away quickly.
"Bye Lexi, bye Sare. See you in class." I say and I start walking with James to Coach's office.
"You look beautiful today, Grayson." James says, using my full name because he knows I don't like being called that.
"I should say the same for you, Jameson." I say back with a smirk. He suddenly pins me between the lockers and his body, one hand on either side of me leaving me trapped. He brings his face inches from mine.
"Feisty little one today. I like it." He says and starts walking away. My heart is in my throat and I slowly stand up from the locker I was leaning against and start walking after him. When I finally catch up to him he is already at Coach's office.
"Glad you could make it Gray." He says and James snickers.
"I got held up." I say while glaring at James.
"The reason I asked you here is because, as you know, we are playing the Lions tomorrow. They are the only team that we haven't beat at least once and we need to show them that we won't give up a fight. James, as caption, I expect you to really crack down on the team. Gray, you're a cheerleader, so cheer. Motivate your girls to really put spirit into this game. I'm looking forward to a win." He says
"Yes Coach." We say in unison. He hands us hall passes and a note to our teachers explaining while we're late. Then he motions for us to go.
While we are walking down the hallway side by side, James slaps my butt. I stop walking and he keeps going until he realizes I stopped. He backs up until he's next to me.
"Can you not?" I sneer
"An ass like that is just begging to get slapped." He says with a wink before he walks to class. I get to my classroom, AP Math, and give my teacher the tardy slip.
"Take your seat Gray." Mrs. Withen says. I slide into my seat next to Sarah and
Mrs. Withen continues with the lesson. I try my best to pay attention, but my meeting with Matt tonight is clouding my thoughts. What if he starts yelling? He'll probably deny it all. I don't even have any proof other than that I saw them kissing.
"Whatever you don't finish of this worksheet is homework." Mrs. Withen says, snapping me out of my trance. I take the paper from her hand a stare blankly at it.
"You okay Gray?" Sarah asks me and I hesitantly nod my head yes. "Is it Matt?" I nod my head again and she puts her hand on top of mine. "It'll be okay. Don't worry me and Lexi have your back always." She says and I wipe away a tear before it can fall from my eye.
"Thanks Sare." I say softly and we begin the worksheet to avoid homework.
45 minutes later the bell finally rings, signaling the end of class. I grab my stuff and Sarah links her arm with mine. We walk to our lockers and see Lexi standing there waiting for us.
"Who do I have to murder?" She says when she sees that my eyes are red from crying.
"Matt." I say simply and she pulls me into a hug.
"I'm so sorry Gray." She says. A sudden stream of tears starts to fall from my eyes and soak her shirt. Sarah rubs my back and I hang on tight to Lexi's hug.
"It's not fair. I gave him everything. He was my first everything and he's just throwing me away." I mumble into Lexi's shirt.
"I know Gray. He doesn't deserve you." Sarah says. I let go of Lexi and I see that the hallways are empty.
"Shit" I say and I start walking to class. Lexi grabs my arm, stopping me from going any farther.
"We can skip this class, it's just art. You're way more important." She says and I let them lead me into the bathroom. I look in the mirror and I'm horrified by my appearance. My mascara is running and my eyes are bloodshot. Sarah gets a face wipe from her bag and I gladly take it. I reapply my mascara and lip gloss. Lexi gives me a thumbs up and I smile at her.
"You look wonderful darling." Sarah says in an old time English accent. We all start laughing.
"What time is it?" I ask and Lexi checks her phone.
"9:45." She says
"Damn, class is almost over already." Sarah says exactly what I was about to say.
"Oh well. Thanks for getting us out of water color paining Gray." Lexi says and I laugh.
"Anything for you two." I say. The bell rings and a crowd of girls walks into the bathroom.
"Do we have practice today?" One of the freshmen asks me.
"Yeah, mostly conditioning and drills." I say and the smile drops from her face.
"Okay thanks Gray." She says and her and her friends leave the bathroom.
"We should probably go before we're late. Skipping art is one thing, but science..." Lexi trails of and we get out stuff.
