Chapter 31 March 1 2006

Professor Sparks waited impatiently for Kent. He was beginning to feel the pressure from the ex-CIA defender to find the child and open the case up. He regretted showing Kent the girl's information a few years back, as there were signs Kent had the tenacity to recruit the CIA, but he foolishly chose to ignore it. Finally a knock on the door shattered the anxiety.

"Sorry I'm late. What does the good doctor have for us this time?" Kent asked.

"The child is just about to have her sixth birthday, and wants a dog. She claims she can manifest one. Dr. Rosenthal has made this list of the many things this girl says she can do, and has done them: all metaphysical. The doctor is completely torn apart about the welfare of this child. I've never seen her like this. She started talking about her and then made an interesting comment. She said the child was raised specifically for the purpose of becoming an atheist. She is being raised in a white room. It was to prevent the child from coming into contact with anything that suggested God. She then stopped, as if she was releasing information she didn't want me to know. It's as if she fears the child's life is in danger, but that's just my theory."

"That is interesting," commented Kent, and he scratched his short cropped beard and stood silent for a moment. "We need to talk. It's time to find this girl. We need to protect her. Can you get the address or any information to her whereabouts?"

Sparks knew his back was against a wall. "I'm not comfortable with that and you know why. I can't strip my reputation with Dr. Rosenthal. She has the power to take away my livelihood, and after seeing her yesterday, I'm dead sure she would do it. Can you think of any other reason why she's concerned about the child's welfare?"

"I understand your issue with your job Sparks. What other way can we find this kid without Rosenthal linking you to it?"

"Who's we? Are you talking about the CIA now? You haven't gone to them have you? You're referring to you and me, right?" Sparks began to panic. He didn't want the child and mother separated, a situation that would surely happen with CIA involvement, but he didn't think it was wise for child to stay in that environment. And if the CIA were involved, he and the doctor would be out of the spotlight. He began to sweat, and feel as though he had created a monster that was going to take him out regardless of the card he played.

"Sparks are you really that naïve? Once a CIA, always a CIA."

"So you did! You told them! When was that Kent? Did you lie to me at the beginning or in the middle?" Sparks was mad now, knowing a good friend had used him.

"Does it matter?" Kent began to stand taller. "You knew this situation was going to blow up the minute Rosenthal brought in the tapes of her language. That's not information you play around with, hoping to expose it some day for a few minutes of fame. That's information that people like you should not be playing with."

"People like me? You wouldn't have known anything if I didn't ask you to join me! I trusted you!"

"And Rosenthal trusted you. Look in the mirror Sparks. If that child and her apparent gifts, if she truly has them, get out to the public, we'll have riots and revolution on our hands. Those people out there that drive their little cars and sip cappuccinos can't handle the truth. That's why the CIA exists. Because people can't handle the stuff we deal with every day. This planet is not what any of them think it is. Imagine exposing everything we have? What do you think it would look like in one day?"

"What do you mean by gifts? What are you not telling us?"

Kent paused, weighing his words. "The child is for real. In fact, your good doctor doesn't even have the slightest clue what she stumbled upon."

Sparks grabbed the edge of the table to keep his balance. He was sweating profusely now, his head spinning and unable to make sense out of anything.

"Sit down before you kill yourself," said Kent. "We're planning to locate the mother and child. I'll try not to link you to any of this, but the drawings and tapes have to come with me right now. If Rosenthal wonders what happened, I'll let her know we were following her and we broke into your office. That way you're out of the picture." And he looked at his anguished friend. "I suggest you hide your panic. Rosenthal would pick that up in a heartbeat. And you might heed a warning to keep up your meetings with her until we have the kid." Kent gathered all the materials while Sparks sat frozen in the old wooden chair. He didn't look at Kent or say goodbye when the CIA man walked out with the tapes and paperwork. He got up, put on his coat and told the nearest secretary he was going home with the flu.

Kent never showed up again.
