Serah POV

"To put it in a more comprehensive way, your grandma was my sister's best friend."

Aunt Inhana was grandma's best friend.

"How would that work, I would have known and she's a human-"

"If you've let me finish you'd know by now." She said giggling but pursued. "Sister was the oldest child of the Markens, following me, Garret (the twins' dad) and our cute younger brother, Ilan. Mom died soon after giving birth to Ilan, at that time Inhana was 22, she had neither shifted nor found her mate, it was quite a rare for a wolf of alpha blood. Our mom was quite a delicate person, they just wanted one kid but after her 14th birthday, they had no choice but to try again so the bloodline would still continue.
Anyway, after that, she basically raised us as dad tried to cop as he could after losing his mate. He wasn't a jerk or anything, he was simply broken and tried to forget by diving into paper work whenever he could."

She paused to serve herself some water and continued her story, not before smiling to herself probably reminiscing old stories.

"Serah, now that I think about it, you kinda are like your grandma."

My lips curved slightly, as my grandma still held a special place in my heart, she knew what was going on in my head before I could form words to state it.

"You think?"

I asked, and Jeorgia bright face transported me to years before my insignificant existence.

"Wouah, you live in the forest? Like in those cute cabins? How is it ? Do you wake up by the birds singing and are there-"

"Shut up, will you, someone is trying to drive."

Finally, she got distracted. That girl only knew how to run her mouth non stop. Honestly, if it wasn't for her love towards wild animals and everything that contained chlorophyll, she would have killed me with all her useless words.

Slowly, my feet pressured the brakes when the parking came to my view. Right next to the pack house. Now I hit the brakes not so delicately.
Our body moved forward quite violently making the seatbelt work.

"What was that for?!"

"There was a bee."

Her eyes softened and she composed herself.

"Oh... It couldn't be helped then."

I fought hard, really hard to not expose my cover. Are all humans gullible? She didn't wait for me to get out of the car.
I followed her only to see her jumping around.

"It's so nice, no skyscrapers, no traffic, no noise and real oxygen."

She exhaled with happiness. But I won't blame her, their human city was a giant trash can. My lungs burnt through all the chemicals floating in the air, micro plastic on most of the food and all wild animals emigrating to run away from the incessant noise throughout the day. Well, there was more than one reason to flee from that place.
If it wasn't for my college degree, I wouldn't be out there, well if it wasn't for my constitution, I wouldn't be going to college, I wouldn't be in the city to run away from my reality.
However, every misfortune came with a blessing and mine was her; Cynthia Rolland.

The cutest and purest human of Tremor College.

As I was mostly homeschooled, I had no interest in making friends or getting to know anyone. But once a week, I had to show my face and sign that attendance sheet.
And there I met her, Miss Rolland, in Cell Biology.
The girl was mad, she tried to convince us that humans were meant to live up to eight hundred years. Yeah humans.

To say less, everyone laughed, I didn't and her other friend didn't either. I could smell the stranger, she wasn't human.
I was on alert and she also sensed my sharpness.
Great, first day of class and already making ennemis.

The foul urged me to get away from the lecture hall when the bell rang. However, I did not have this privilege, an unknown species was on our territory and it was my job as Markens to hold the trial.
The girls were still on their desks, picking each of their pens.

"What are you doing here?"

I wasn't one to circle around, I wanted answers and now.
The famous blue eyed one looked between us in bewilderment.

"Who the hell are you?"

I scoffed, I didn't expect her to know me but her insolence was beyond my range of sympathy.

"Does it matter? What is a rogue doing on our territory, answer before you beg for mercy in front of the higher ups."

"Maybe if you use a language I can understand, I'd be able to answer."

The rogue made a face full of annoyance and incomprehension. And her feelings were quite contagious, to me and to the human.

"What's a rogue?"

Now, I might get the story together.
I ignored Cynthia and kept my eyes on the half wolf.

"You don't know what you are?"

She rolled her eyes a bit pissed.

"It's a bit hard to ignore a voice that is not yours in your head."

"Then how did it-"

"Look at me, whatever you are, I don't think we're close enough so I can disclose you some personal information."

"Girl you're on our territory. So yes, it's my business. I don't care about your family, just tell me what a lone wolf is doing here without authorization before this gets bigger?"

"I live alone with my mom, a human. My non-existent dad was probably a werewolf as I discovered I was one at fourteen, so I have no idea what you're talking about and I'm just here for college. Happy, now fuck of."

She took her bag and stormed away at lightning speed. At least, now we got to know that she wasn't much of a threat, still, she needed to meet the higher ups.

"You're an asshole you know! If you were polite to begin with, it wouldn't have needed to be a big deal."

I forgot about the human. She copied her friend leaving me alone in this giant amphitheater.

That's how we became friends five years ago, Cynthia, Kanna and I. Not the best starts but I managed to have Kanna come to the pack and she, then, officially became a member of Ice Moon.
Cynthia did not have any access as humans were not welcomed, even strangers from other packs by the way, but today was an exception.
Kanna met her mate and she was moving to the Grand Shield pack.

"Kanna!!"

Cynthia went and jumped into her arms.

"Hello, girls I'm still here."

Both of them came to hug me, I shouldn't have said that, now it was too much.

"How did you know we arrived?"

Cynthia asked innocently.

"I heard the car."

Kanna responded with sass.

"Girls go without me, I have a meeting now and it's quite important."

The girls nodded and they scurried off to the party hall, next to the pack house. As for me, my pace accelerated not because I wanted to get to the farewell party as soon as possible but today, it was my last chance.
My final hope, if it wasn't today, it will be never.

Lost in my thoughts, my legs remembered the way anyway and here I was knocking at the door of my dad's office.

A pair of amazing orange ochre dove into mine. The person took my hand immediately and led me inside.

If my senses were not as developed, I would have missed the 'false alert' he muttered.

My eyes trailed down to his rolled up sleeves, leaving his veiny forearms to my view. His whole attire was simple but I didn't know why, but he dressed up like some old aristocrat. Whatever, it was hot.

"Dear, it's Henry Silverknight, the lycan I talked about."

My eyes went back to him and he was already looking at me.

"Nice to meet you Inhana, I guess your father told you, I have a very particular bond with the wolves of Ice Moon or to be more precise with the Markens. So just come closer and let me see if I can reach her."

The wood creaked under my weight and all I could see was his face getting closer to mine. My eyelids closed unconsciously and I felt his forehead touching mine.
For some reasons, I felt better, I felt calm, as if my spiraling thoughts finally found their exit.
We stayed for a long five minutes like this but I was in trance, and the time went was in my reality.

The cold air hit my forehead, signaling me to open my eyes and a small smile went across his face. A smile, representing everything but happiness.

"She's mourning. Give her a bit more time."

My eyebrows were scrunched together but it didn't make sense.

"Mom died two years ago, my wolf, I mean, it's been ten years what is she mourning for?"

My voice was coloured in desperation, my throat feeling the lump I could not swallow. My head was floating in the mess.
He sat, giving me an apologetic look.

"Your mate, she's grieving your mate. She simply needs time before you meet your second chance."

Wait. What?

"Are you saying that I already lost my mate, how would you be so sure that I have a second-"

He sighed and cut me off.

"Please, slow down, she told me she has a new mate, but she wasn't ready to meet him yet. So give her time and space to grieve. Don't go rumbling with self hate because she hears everything, talk to her sometimes, she might not respond but it'll help her. The only way you'll get to meet your mate is to befriend her because, she is well capable of ignoring the bond if she still thinks of your previous mate."

Goddess, it was getting out of hand, why would things have to be so complicated.
Before I could dwell on my pathetic life, I heard Ilan cries from here.
It brought a ghost of a smile to my lips.
At least someone was missing me.

The door banged open not from the outside but from the hurried lycan that stormed off.
I followed and I saw a supposedly happy scene, but I couldn't control the cracks of my heart.

There I saw Cynthia holding Ilan, but her eyes were already entranced by some amber ones.
I knew their gaze.
I knew its meaning.

"Mate."

Henry growled.

I should be happy, but today, I will be losing two of my friends to their mate, when mine was simply gone.
I was the worst friend to think like that. To be sulking instead of celebrating.

...

"That would be how your grandparents met, Inhana was sincerely depressed and Henry could feel it. So did Cynthia.
They offered her to live with them, in their small territory, Henry needed to be close to her so her wolf could feel safe to come out and Cynthia just wanted her friend near.
So they left Ice Moon, and sister brought Ilan with her. He was only two around that time and he considered Inhana as his mom so it was the best decision at the time.

Years went by, Cynthia had Iris and Eos, and fifteen years later, Inhana finally met her mate, though she never disclosed his identity. She then had Kevin, that you probably know well, and your mom had you a few years later.
Ilan also found his mate and moved to New Zealand.

However, a few years after your birth, she disappeared."

If the appartement was silent, then now, no sound waves were allowed in the living room.
The expression on Jeorgia face communicated on its own, sadness, sorrow and full incomprehension.

...

Thank you for keeping up!!!
