~Skylar's POV~
I woke up, well, I haven't really slept. But I finally got out of bed at 3am to get ready to go to the airport.
I got dressed in thick leggings, and a sweater. I also had a jacket since it shows that it's snowing in Chicago.
At 4am, Daniel showed up.
"Hey.. does your family know about us? Or the fact that I'm even going there?" He asked me.
I shook my head.
"No... I don't think they would mind though... my brother and sister might be tease us.. but I don't think they would mind..." I explained.
"What are you parents like anyway? You said you come from a firefighter and emt family. What are they?" He asked me.
"One of my moms in a firefighter, and the other one is a paramedic." I said. He doesn't know I have 2 moms, this was the first time I told him.
"Oh, I didn't know you had two moms." He chuckled.
"Yea I do." I chuckled.
"You already ordered the Uber right?" He asked me.
I nodded my head.
"Yea, the app says they should be here in 5 minutes." I said.
"Does your family know we're going there?" He asked me. I shook my head.
No one knows I'm going. I want to surprise them. Have one good thing happen during this hard time. I
Surprise visit with the people I love, even if one less person is there.
He stroked my hair and moved it out of my face so he could see me. He picked up my chin to see my face.
"Have you slept?" He asked me. I sighed and shook my head.
"No it's just... everything just hit me like a train... the realization... the guilt for forgetting until my mom called me...." I said, getting some tears in my eyes.
He got a napkin and wiped my tears.
"It's ok... I understand how difficult this probably is for you right now..." He told me, as we hugged and I rested my head on his shoulder.
Then I notification on my phone.
"Uber's here..." I sniffled, looking at my phone.
Daniel and I each had one luggage, plus I had my purse and he had a book bag.
We got to the airport.
The airport was very empty. It seemed like it was a ghost town.
Once we got to the gate, everything was just now opening back up. It was now almost 6:30am.
"Hey, let's get some coffee before we board..." I yawned when I saw a Starbucks.
"Sure thing." Daniel chuckled.
We ordered our coffee and sat by the gate.
"Hey... I know we've only been dating for 2 weeks now... but.. do you think your family will have a problem or think it's weird that I'm over there? I mean I want to be here for you... but I'm worried they might not like me..." Daniel asked me.
"I'm not really sure... but... why don't we say we've been dating for a month, I mean, come on, you came in the coffee shop everyday for the first 2 weeks we met. Asking for me everyday. And then the days I was there, we would sit, flirt, and just talk for like 10-15 minutes. Then you finally took me out on an actual date... and here we are 2 weeks later." I chuckled.
"Ok... yea... a month.. ok... man... you know I told my family a little bit about you.. and they thought we were rushing this... but... I don't know... you just... seem different.." he smiled.
I smiled at him.
"I feel the same way... and also... one more little thing, no one kinda knows about you.... Neither my family.. or my therapist.." I chuckled.
He laughed.
"Well... they're about to find out.." he laughed.
"Flight S9395J2 to Chicago will start boarding now." We heard some lady at the gate announce.
Daniel and I got on the plane and we both passed out almost immediately after the plane took off.
We landed in Chicago at noon LA time, but in Chicago, it's 10am. We got through baggage claim and we're now waiting outside for someone to bring us our rental car. It was cold, but it was just how I remembered it. I could tell Daniel was freezing.
"Ok, I'm never moving to Chicago..." He laughed as he put on his jacket.
"Come on, it's not that bad. I was born and raised here." I laughed.
"I think I'll stick to LA." He laughed.
We got our car and I decided to drive since I knew where to go. It felt so nostalgic being back in Chicago, I haven't been here in over a year now.
I couldn't tell if I was happy, sad, confused... I really couldn't tell exactly what emotions I was feeling, driving. We pulled up to my moms' house.
I knew they always knew a spare key in the mailbox. I grabbed it and opened the door.
We went inside.
"Hello? Anyone home?" I yelled out. No response.
"That's weird..." I said.
"Babe... it's almost 11am on a Tuesday." Daniel said.
I realized he was right.
"Yea you're right... let me check something." I said. I went into the kitchen and saw my moms' work schedule.
"They're on shift. My siblings must be at school..." I said.
"So, what do you wanna do?" Daniel asked me.
I looked at me a sort of smiled.
"Do you... wanna take a ride to the firehouse where my family works at?" I asked him.
He kinda chuckled.
"Sure." He laughed.
We got changed out of our airport outfits and got more put together.
We drove to the firehouse, but there was no one there. All the units were out on a call.
But we noticed something outside.
"Hey.. what is that?" Daniel asked, it looked like some memorial statue.
I was confused and went to go look.
We went closer and I couldn't believe what we were looking at.
"Oh my god..." I said under my breath.
Daniel had this hand on my back.
"Did you know him?" He asked me. I nodded my head.
"Yea.. I kinda grew up in this firehouse.." I said.n
We left Otis' memorial after about 5 minutes.
We went inside the firehouse.
Almost immediately after we went into the common room, we heard the garage doors open. Daniel and I saw from the kitchen, we saw Ambo roll up.
"Hey, I think an ambulance just pulled in." Daniel told me.
"Oh, yea. That's one of my moms and Violet. The 2 paramedics here. My other mom works on truck." I explained.
He nodded his head.
Him and I were now just sitting at the common room table, sort of hiding in the chairs.
"Hey, how's Skylar doing in LA?" I heard Violet ask.
"Why don't you ask me?" I turned around and laughed.
Both their jaws dropped.
I got up and hugged them both.
"Oh my god, when did you get in town?" Mom hugged me so tight.
"We just got here like 2 hours ago." I laughed.
"We?" Violet asked. Then Daniel walked up behind me.
"This is my boyfriend." I chuckled.
"Daniel Quinn." He shook both their hands.
"Why didn't I know about this?" Mom laughed.
"Well.. now you do." I laughed.
"Well, how's LA?" Violet laughed.
"Good, good. I graduate next year. So I'm super close to my career." I said.
"How's your job at that coffee shop going?" My mom asked.
Daniel and I looked at each other.
"Good. That's how we met.." I chuckled.
Then truck pulled up and once Ma saw me, she ran to me and hugged me.
"Oh my god, Hi!" She laughed and hugged me.
I hugged her tight.
"Hi..." I said.
-1 hour later-
My moms, Daniel, and I were talking in the briefing.
"Where are you guys staying? Because you guys can stay at the house." Ma said.
"Yea, we kinda just planned on staying there, our bags are already there in my old room." I chuckled.
"How much longer are you guys in Chicago for?" Mom asked.
"We leave the day after tomorrow. I just wanted to come here, since I haven't been here since I moved." I explained.
"How does it feel to be back home?" Ma asked.
"You know... weird... like part of me is happy, but part of me is also just really triggered..." I explained.
"So.. Daniel, what are you planning on doing in terms of career?" Mom asked him.
"I'm becoming an intelligence Officer in LA." He explained.
"Oh nice, my uncle used to be one here. But he moved to Puerto Rico about 25 years ago." Mom said.
"How long have you guys been together?" Ma asked.
Daniel looked at me.
"Um... a month.." I chuckled.
"I know we haven't been together for long... but I care about your daughter.." Daniel told my moms.
They smiled at him and looked at each other.
"As long as you don't break her heart. We won't have issues." Ma told him.
I chuckled.
"So. How long are you guys gonna stay in the firehouse for?" Mom asked.
I looked at the time, it was almost 2:30.
"When do Maxx and Scarlett get off of school again?" I asked.
"Well Maxx has Football practice, and Scarlett has soccer practice. Maxx's practice ends at 5:30, and Scarlett's ends at 6. After his practice, Maxx goes over to Scarlett's school to pick her up from her practice. Then they walk home." Ma explained.
I looked at Daniel, he kinda knew where I was going with this, so he chuckled and nodded his head.
"Can we go pick them up at 6?" I asked.
My moms smiled and nodded their heads.
"Yea, they'll be so excited to see you." Mom smiled.
-6pm-
Daniel and I drove to Scarlett's school. We walked to the field. We saw Maxx on the bleachers, watching Scarlett play. Once they were done. Scarlett went to Maxx on the bleachers. They wrapped up and started walking out. They were talking with each other, before I spoke.
"Hey guys. Wanna ride?" I asked them.
They looked up and once they saw me, their faces lit up and they ran to me. I hug them both so tight.
"Oh my gosh, I missed you!" Scarlett squealed.
"I missed you guys too... it's so good to see you guys again... you guys look so big from when I last saw you." I told them.
Last time I saw them was over 6 months ago.
"You guys want a ride home? We can drive you." I said.
"We?" Maxx asked.
Then they noticed Daniel behind me.
"Hey guys." He smiled at them.
"Guys, this is my boyfriend, Daniel. Daniel, this is my younger brother Maxx, and my younger sister Scarlett." I introduced them.
"Hey." Maxx told him. Ever since the whole thing with Cam happened, Maxx has turned into my "protective brother" now. Even though I've told him he doesn't need to.
"You like my sister?" Scarlett asked him.
"Yea I do." Daniel chuckled.
"Have you guys kissed?" She giggled.
Daniel looked at me and laughed.
"Oh yea, a bunch of times." He told her.
"Ew!" She giggled.
"Come on, let's get you guys home. You guys want to get some dinner before we go home?" I asked them.
"Yes!" They said.
"Ok, what do you guys want?" I asked them.
"McDonald's." They said.
We got them their dinner and we all went back to the house.
