‘I want to cross it off’ Luke pouted.
We were back in the car and arguing about who got to cross New Plymouth off of the list.
I didn’t tell Luke about Ashton telling me they were famous.
Simply because when I tried, I  couldn’t get the words out of my mouth.
I didn’t want to fight with him, but I also didn’t want to keep a secret.
Especially not the one he was trying to keep away from me.
‘Okay fine, you cross it off’ I said, giving him the marker.
Luke took the marker and looked at me, but not the way he always does.
He was looking at me as if something was wrong, he looked worried.
I would be lying if I said I was in a good mood today, but that’s just because I apparently sucked at keeping secrets.
I just wanted to tell him that I knew, but I couldn’t, I didn’t want to ruin his road trip. ‘Are you okay?’ he asked carefully.
‘Yes, I’m fine. Just cross it off’ I answered, showing him a little smile.
He didn’t buy it, I could see it in his eyes, but he was smart enough to let it go.
‘You know what I want to do?’ I said, trying to lighten up the mood a little.
Luke folded the map back up and looked at me.
‘No, what is it?’
‘Well, remember how we went to drink something a while back and I got to choose between tea or coffee? I feel like drinking some coffee’
Luke grinned and started up the car, driving out of the parking lot
‘Let’s do that then’
After that we went quiet and to make it a little less awkward, I pulled out my phone and pretended to be busy.
I just didn’t understand why it was such a big deal for Luke to tell me he was famous. I was curious about the music he made but other than that nothing changed.
What did he expect me to do? Go crazy? I don’t even know what his band is called or what kind of music they make so how was I supposed to go crazy, maybe I didn’t even like their music.
It only took us 15 minutes to find a place to buy some coffee and when Luke parked the car, we both got out and went inside.
We ordered 2 coffee’s to go and I paid for it this time.
He might be famous and probably have a ridiculous amount of money but I want to spent my money too.
‘You didn’t have to do that, but thank you’ Luke said, wrapping his arm around my shoulder as we walked back to the car.
I smiled and looked down at my feet.
‘You always say that when I spent my money on something’
‘That’s because I could’ve paid for it too’
‘Yeah I know, but I wanted to do it’
My mind was racing, searching for ways to keep talking to him without blurting out that I knew, or making myself look suspicious.
‘Anyway, let’s just go sit in the car again’
I slipped away from under his arm and walked the last part alone, silently beating myself up for acting so ridiculous.
When we both got back in the car, Luke started it up again and we made our way to the highway.
We were quiet again, which kind of worried me.
Whenever I was quiet Luke always tried to make conversation with me.
Mostly because he knew something was bothering me when I was quiet.
But today, he didn’t even bother trying. Like he had his own problems to think about.
I’m sure he has those too, especially now that I know he’s famous.
I’m pretty sure his friends are not constantly calling him just because they wanted to check up on him.
‘Hey Luke?’ I asked, trying to get him to cheer up.
‘Did you do some research on…wherever we’re going now?’
I looked at him expectantly but he didn’t answer.
‘Luke?’ I asked again, touching his arm to get him out of his thoughts.
He turned his head around and looked at me with a confused expression on his face before looking back at the road.
‘I’m sorry, what did you say?’ he asked.
‘I…ehm… I was just wondering if you had an idea of what you wanted to do in the next place we stop’ I said.
‘Oh, well not really. I don’t even know if there’s anything to do there.’
‘What’s it called again? The place we’re going’
‘Hawera’
‘That sounds funny’
Luke smiled but didn’t answer.
