On Painting That Object

Whenever you try to make a reader visualize something, always remember to be specific.

Don't just say, "May nakalutang na maitim na bagay sa kalangitan."

Say, "May nakalutang na higanteng itim sa kalangitan. Hugis bilog, at singlaki ng Araneta."

On the second example, you'd easily realize na maaaring may spaceship na nakalutang sa kalangitan kung saan naroroon ang bida. This is obviously better than the previous one.

Make it a habit to reread every chapters you write. And in doing this, place yourself in the mind of a reader. Tanggalin mo 'yung initial picture ng eksena sa isip mo at ibase mo lang sa kung anong nakalagay sa sinulat mo. Do you think your descriptions are enough?

If yes, then good. If no, you need to rewrite it.

If there is a vague object included in your story, you need to paint it with colors. Identify its shape, texture, size, and the likes. Don't just say, "Bumili siya ng pagkain." Anong klaseng pagkain? May ulam ba? Chichirya? Dessert? You get the idea.

But be mindful of your descriptions. Too much information bores the reader. Ugaliin din syempreng piliin kung ano lang ang dapat na ilagay at kung alin ang sapat na.

You could just say, "Bumili siya ng pansit." But no need to specify anong klaseng pansit, kung bihon ba, or palabok, or Malabon. Gano'n.
