Chapter 1: Spectres and Nadirs

Spectres and Nadirs

The local news is airing another report and every minute, they just kept on repeating the same thing. I glanced at the swirling steam from the cup of coffee placed on the table and glanced at the small TV screen.

"One student from a prestigious school was discovered dead near the school grounds. There are no witnesses to the foregoing incident, which is still being investigated by the police-"

Naputol ang balita nang bigla kong patayin ang TV. Wala na rin akong balak na pakinggan pa ang mga susunod na balita dahil wala naman itong kwenta.

The news kept saying that the police are investigating the incident, but they never showed us the perpetrator, or perpetrators behind the killings.

Full of mysterious murder cases with no justice, napakagandang bungad sa umaga.

"Plain bullshit," I cursed while shaking my head. I heaved a sigh and took a sip on my coffee and suddenly, the space beside me was occupied.

I squinted my eyes in annoyance and looked at her.

"Ba't mo pinatay?" curious na tanong sa akin ni Melody, ang kasama apartment na tinitirahan ko ngayon. Napabuga ako ng hangin at inilapag ang baso sa lamesa.

"It ruins my mood in the morning. Oh, ba't ang aga mong gumising? Wala ka namang pasok ngayong araw," walang gana kong sagot at pinagkrus ang aking braso.

Tinitigan lang ako nito at saka naghikab, mukhang inaantok pa. Sabado ngayon pero hindi lahat ng school dito ay walang pasok. It's amazing how the schools are still operating, like no murder cases are happening.

"Pupunta ako sa mall para bumili ng damit, sama ka?" she asked, but I instantly refused since I hate crowded places.

We've been living together for about... several months? I don't remember anymore.

Ugh, ang boring. Wala man lang akong magawa dito sa bahay na 'to. Walang cellphone, walang wifi, at walang kahit ano. Hindi ko rin alam paano ako nagtagal dito.

Basta ang alam ko ay nagising ako ng wala ng abilities.

I am now a Nadir, a powerless human. A useless piece of shit in this abusive society. Spectres are referred to as gifted humans since they have abilities, and I used to be like one.

It's strange how I lost it, and I can't remember why and how the hell it happened. Umiling nalang ako at hinayaan ang mga katanungang iyon na bumabagabag sa akin araw-araw.

Malalaman ko rin ito sa susunod, sana.

"Aalis na ako!" sabi niya at agad akong napatayo sa kinauupuan ko.

Damn, I never noticed how my mind is so occupied again. Sa sobrang pag-iisip ko ay nakaligo't nakabihis na si Melody na ngayo'y malapad ang ngiti sa'kin.

"Bakit?" She gave me a questioning look, while I looked like an idiot standing.

"Sasama ako sa'yo," wala sa sarili kong sabi at napatakip sa aking bibig.

God, I can't believe I made a rash decision, but I think I should join her just this once. Mukhang gulat pa siya sa sinabi ko at nakangangang tumango.

It's dangerous for her to go alone, especially if there is a murderer in our town.
