Chapter 18

Darryl POV

Zak's been quiet since we started following Mega and Clay. He's been really tense the whole time.

I don't understand why he trusted Zelk and George almost immediately but it's taking so long for him to trust them.

They're trying to help us and he's threatening them with a gun.

Suddenly Zak stopped walking.

That caused me, Zelk, and George to stop. Mega and Clay noticed that we stopped and turned to look at us.

"What's wrong?" Clay asked.

We all turned to Zak to see what he would say.

"Do you guys hear that?" He mumbled.

I listened for any sound, but heard nothing other than the sound of my own breathing. We all stood there in silence for a few seconds.

"I don't hear anything." Zelk whispered.

"Yeah." Mega said, "Zak, are you feeling okay?"

Zak gave him the death look causing Mega to look away.

"Come on, lets just keep moving." Clay said.

We all started walking again, after a few seconds Zak froze.

Before any of us even had a chance to speak, he turned around and fired the gun. "Oh my goodness." I said as I turned around.

Laying a couple feet behind me was a man with a gun. He had a bullet hole in his chest. I looked away from the scene before me.

He was going to shoot me.

"Is everyone okay?" Mega said.

We all nodded.

"We have to be more careful." Zelk said.

"We should get going before anything else happens." Clay said.

We were a bit shaken up by that, but I realized that Zak hasn't said a word. I glanced over at him and he was staring at the body, seeming mesmerized.

"Zak, are you okay?" I asked.

He didn't answer.

"Are you okay?" I repeated.

He still didn't reply.

I grabbed his arm to get his attention.

He immediately flinched and yelled, "Get away from me!"

I backed up instantly.

Then I realized my mistake.

Zak POV

After a whole year.

A whole year of no human contact.

What does Darryl do?

He decides to grab my arm.
