I lead my three kids outside for truck or treating. My youngest, Ally, who was 4, was dressed up as Anna from Frozen. My oldest, Cara, who was 9, was dressed as Elsa. My other child, Emily, who was 7, was dressed as Olaf. Let's just say, my kids are big Frozen fans.
Since Halloween hadn't officially started, considering it was only 6, and trick or treating usually started at 6:30, we decided to go to our street's annual Halloween Pizza party.
As we walked over, we saw a couple and their three getting their pizza.
"Mommy!" Ally yelled. "That's my friend, Marie!"
She pointed to a little girl wearing a panda costume.
"Can we talk to them? Please! Please! Please!" Ally begged.
"Okay." I said.
We walked over to where the couple and their kids were standing.
"Hi. I'm Catherine Janis. I believe our daughters are friends?" I said to the mother.
"I could tell from what Marie had told me about her friend Ally to know that's her. I'm Hazel, by the way." the mother, Hazel said. "I believe Sammy and Ruby know your two other daughters."
I looked over, and I saw Emily talking to a boy that I could only guess was Sammy, who was wearing an Iron Man costume and Cara talking to who was most likely Ruby, who was wearing an Arctic Princess costume.
"Well, would you be up for group trick or treating?" I asked.
"Actually, group trick or treating would be great. Let's eat some pizza and then we can go." Hazel said.
Our large group sat down to eat their pizza. I found out that Hazel's husband's name was Frank.
"So, Catherine, where's your husband?" Hazel asked.
"Oh... He went MIA two years ago in Afghanistan." I replied.
"Wait... You wouldn't have happened to be married to Michael Janis, would you?" Frank asked.
And my heart stopped.
I gulped and replied "I am married to Michael Janis."
"Catherine. I was a general in the army at that time." Frank said.
I remembered getting a letter from someone named General Zhang. I started to get sad, but I tried to stay strong.
We finished eating our pizza, then gathered our group.
Then, we went off to go trick or treating.
