Some of the characters in this story speak telugu and so I would be translating it into English in bold form with brackets.

It was the last day of the millennium, people around the world were cheering, eagerly waiting for the new millennium to begin. The people living in a small village in Andhra were least bothered about the celebrations, all they were concerned was to have a good night's sleep, wake up the next day and go back to work. In them was the Rao's family who were awake not because they wanted to celebrate the new year but Rama Rao's wife Anita was in labour since morning, she was the most  beautiful lady in that village who was in her early thirties, medium height and weight with a good complexion. They were going to be parents again for the second time. Jatin, their ten year old son was growing up fast with dark brown eyes and black wavy hair, who had took up his mother's genes regarding complexion and even the character, and he too was trying to keep his eyes wide open to meet his younger sibling.

A short and stout built lady nurse working at a hospital in a nearby town was with Anita since evening, monitoring her along with Anita's sixty year mother-in-law, Lalitha who was with Anita on and off since morning. Lalitha was a typical Indian mother-in-law, who would taunt her daughter-in-law whenever she got a chance to. Being in her early sixties, she had semi grey medium length hair that was tied into a bun most of the time and she wore cotton sarees at all time. She always thought that being fair skinned gave her all the happiness she deserved in life and so she never said "No" to anything her husband had asked for, even if it was hurting or demanding from other people, she did it just because her husband loved her due to her skin colour. In a way she was a bit racist and so she always felt a bit superior with all the women she was in contact with specially those who had a bit darker skin tone than that of her.

Men were not allowed to enter the room where Anita was and so Rama Rao, his son Jatin, and Rama Rao's sixty five year old father kept were waiting outside in the living room. Seated on his father's lap in the chair, Jatin unwillingly closed his eyes and fell asleep in seconds drooling on his father's chest.

'Oh lord help my wife!' Rama Rao kept praying when he heard Anita's cries.

It was exactly twelve in the night when the baby was born leaving Bhaskar Rao baffled "oh lord, what an inauspicious time"  he said. Rama Rao's father was more of an orthodox person and also a priest at the local temple.

With the world cheering, firing crackers, embracing the new millennium, Rama Rao was too happy and was in tears when he was told by his mother that he is now the father of a girl, while Anita, Rama Rao's wife, cried looking at the beautiful girl, all the pain she experienced till then just vanished away in split second looking at those big brown beautiful eyes wide open, looking at her "You are my angel, nuvvu naa pranam (you're my life)"
She said kissing the knuckles of the newborn. Rama Rao stood at the door of the  bedroom where Anita and the new born were. He was impatient to hold his newborn and find out how Anita was doing. He was just allowed to get a glimpse of his wife and daughter, then the nurse politely told him to move away as she still needed to help Anita and the baby clean up.

An hour later, the nurse came out with a smile, "you can go in now!"

"Lalitha... ee pilla puttina time assalu baaledu, ee ammayi naa intlo undakudadu (this girl is born at a very inauspicious time and I don't want her in this house!!" said Bhaskar to his wife when she came out.

"Avuna, meeru ami chepte ade chestaanu (is it! Whatever you say I'll do)" replied his obedient wife who never would say a word against her husband. What she did not understand was being obedient, she unknowing was following the footsteps of her husband who was a stubborn and mean minded person l, who would not think for a second if others would be hurt by his behavior or actions.
