12: Kaitlyn

“No, Dani.”

“Kaitlyn, come on! This is the last day you have off work! You’ve been visiting your dad all week, please just come this once.”

“Dani, I really don’t-”

“Please Kaitlyn! I don’t want to go alone with Curtis. I mean, I really like him and I-”

“Dani I don’t want to be the third wheel, you know that. I know you’re just going to go off with him somewhere and I’m going to have to find my own way home.”

“No, I’ll give you my car keys and Curtis can just drive me home if we get separated.”

“Dani-”

“Please, K? For me? And if you hate it you never have to go to another party ever again.”

“Fine,” I said, giving in and letting my friend get what she wants.

“Yay!” She squealed and clapped her hands. “Now, I have to get you ready.”

She was already in a sparkly black mini skirt that went just above her fingertips when she held them to her sides. She had a plain black short-sleeved shirt on and purple flats to match her purple eye shadow. Her raven black hair was in short and tight curls. She flung random clothes at me and had me put them on. We were never the same size so I couldn’t borrow her clothes and she wasn’t very happy with what I had in my closet. What she threw at me was a mint colored top with lace in the back and a black skirt that flows out around my mid-thigh. She did my make-up and straightened my normally wavy brown hair. She also picked out small-healed black shoes and stood with her hands on her hips to look me over.

“You look amazing!”

“I have never worn any of this. And I think you bought all of it for me,” I told her.

“Does that matter? No, because you look ready to party!”

“Just promise me you won’t drink and drive.”

“Of course I won’t, K!” I sighed and followed her out to her car. I played attention to where we were driving because it was a good forty-five minutes from my house and I did not want to get lost on my own later tonight. And yes, I knew I would be driving home alone because I had a really good feeling that Curtis and Dani would find a way to get away from me. Dani parked on a side road and we made our way up to the house. The music was loud and pulsing and the screaming teenagers could be heard even at this distance. Dani was on the phone with Curtis and she said that they’d meet up at the front door in five minutes. Some druggies were huddled by a yellow van surrounded in a cloud of white smoke and I felt my heart lighten when I didn’t see Ronnie among them.

When Dani ran up the front steps and practically jumped into Curtis’s arms I began to laugh. Until I saw who was standing right behind them.
