Through it all
Part 30
*Justin's POV*
"Was it just me or was that message very inspirational?" Jen asked as we walked up the front steps to my house Sunday morning after church.
"I liked it," I nodded wiggling the door handle open.
"What the heck?" I whispered noticing the light on in the kitchen. "I know I turned that off. And I know I locked the door too..."
"Stay here," I told Jen, and her parents while Ryan and I went to scope out the house. "I have a gun in kitchen," I whispered. "You distract while I get it."
"Why can't I get it?" Ryan asked in a return whisper.
"Cause you don't know which drawer it is," I smirked. "Don't be a baby. Man up."
We tip toed into the kitchen to see a figure with their back turned towards us looking inside the fridge.
I put a finger over my mouth quietly hurrying to the gun drawer and pulled it out, pointing it at the intruder.
"Put your hands where I can see them and back away from the refrigerator," I instructed feeling a little like a cop.
The girl put her hands up and took a step back. "Justin, it's just me," she said in a shaky voice turning around to see me.
"Selena Marie! You scared me!" I yelled putting the gun back in the door before walking up to her. I hugged her small body tight to mine.
"I missed you but how did you get in here?" I asked pulling away to look at her.
"You gave me a key," she smiled.
"Right. Next time, text me," I laughed just in time for the family to walk in the door.
"Who is this?" Carin asked.
"Mom, dad this is Selena. My... Friend?" I said and unfortunately I could see the pain clear as say on Selena's face. "Selena this is my mother in law and father in law. Richard and Carin."
"It's nice to meet you dear," Carin spoke with a smile. "Justin's told me a thing or two about you."
Richard was a little more hurt by this fact of how close I was to Selena.
I took a step back and run my hand through my hair.
"Why don't you guys wait in the living room for a minute while I talk to Selena and then we can all go out to lunch?" I suggested.
Richard protested a bit bit went in the living room with Carin pulling him along.
"Just friends?" She asked clearly upset.
"Sel come on. Those are my in-laws. You really think my wife's dad wants to hear about me moving on?" I said out loud which honestly like of hurt to hear. I wasn't necessarily moving on or 'over' Aubrey but I didn't have a choice and being with Selena made the pain bearable.
"What are we Justin?" She sighed.
"I don't know Selena. You're the one who hasn't picked up the phone all week or even had time for one text," I fought back folding my arms over my chest.
"You have no idea what I've been thought this week," she bit angrily. I'd had never seen this side of her before. Selena always handled everything with a calm outlook and thought before she spoke. She was almost never in a bad mood and even when she was she tried to hide it or fix it.
"So talk to me," I said grabbing her hands. "You know I'm here for you. Just like you are for me."
*Selena's POV*
"I-I I guess I just got overwhelmed. I needed a few days to myself to think about everything I wanted. This is my very first relationship since Luke and that's scary. I thought long and hard and I want to make this work," I ranted knowing that while that was all true, it wasn't really why I stayed away.
"I need to ask you something," I said holding my breath.
"It sounds serious," Carter spoke scooting closer to me.
"Do you think Luke would hate me for moving on?" I asked chickening out.
"Is that why you have been so reluctant?" He asked sympathetically.
I just simply nodded.
"He could never hate you. Trust me, he would want you to be happy. He would want you to be with someone who can protect you and I think that Justin kid can," Carter said with a small smile.
"You should bring him to our family dinner on Friday. It's been forever since you went. Everyone misses you."
"Uh, I don't know. I'm not sure Justin would even want to. He has kids to take care of and stuff so it's kinda hard," I rambled trying to get out of it. For one, I didn't want Justin and Carter that close and two I was DREADING seeing my family again.
"I'm not taking no for an answer." He crossed his arms.
"Fine. I'll be there," I sighed rolling my eyes.
"Everything's all worked out," Justin smiled walking back into the room.
"What are you talking about?" I asked confused.
"Aubrey's family is taking the kids. Come on, I want you to meet my mom," he smiled pulling my hand lightly, like an excited child.
