Working Walkabout

Ever noticed that on any weekday at any time there are always people in suits walking around in central business districts? You know the type – coffee, phone or paperwork in hand and the same constipated 'I'm trying to look purposeful' look on their faces.

Ever wondered why? Sure, you could argue it's simply a function of volume. Business districts are work hubs and it's not like school where everyone follows the same timetable. External meetings, walking meetings, early lunch, late lunch, conferences, client visits. Legitimate work-related stuff, right?

Look away now if you don't want your bubble burst. The truth is they are just as likely doing anything except work. Stepping out to talk to recruiters about potential new jobs. Going to the gym. Personal shopping. Picking up the dry cleaning. Going to the bank.

So who's doing the actual work? Junior staff back in the office who ironically are terrorized by management if they stray from their desks for even a moment. Those jokes about management trainees doing CEO presentations and shareholder briefing packs? Not far from reality. Welcome to our world.
