I went on 2 weeks annual leave. Everyone just postponed everything until I got back and I now had a huge backlog to clear. To add insult to injury they gratuitously 'volunteered' me for all the work that came up during my absence.
Moral of the story: annual leave isn't "time off" it just compresses the work into the time before and after it.
