End of Year 11 Prom – Age 16

Sarah curled Ruth’s hair into spiralling ringlets while the front half was pulled back to form a half up half down hairstyle. Her midnight blue dress flowed down to the floor, covering her navy 2 ½ inch heels. Noah was taking her, of course, and Tabitha, Finley, and the girl who’d started their school, Dana Law. Dana was already at Ruth’s, wearing a baby pink, making her look like a Barbie doll with her blonde curled hair. The doorbell rang as the last curl was put into Ruth’s brunette hair. Melissa opened the door, let Tabitha and her strange green dress that narrowly fitted around her chubby body. Ruth walked downstairs, her heels clicking on the wooden stairs. Noah walked in, black tux, midnight blue tie to match Ruth’s dress. He smiled in awe as he saw her.

“You look amazing.” Noah whispered, barely able to speak in amazement of how beautiful his best friend looked. Dana and Tabitha looked amazed at Ruth.

“Whoa.” Tabitha whispered.  Dana just smiled in amazement at the fact that Ruth looked amazingly grownup. She didn’t look 16; she looked 18, maybe even 19 or older. It wasn’t the Ruth everyone was used to.

“Do I look okay?” Ruth asked Noah nervously. He nodded and hugged her cautiously,

“You look amazing, Ruth.” Noah whispered, just wanting to kiss her, knowing he couldn’t, that he shouldn’t. A car honked outside, the limo to the university hall where their prom was being held. Everyone stared at the four of them walked in.

“Is that Ruth Anthony?” Yasmin Carter whispered to another of her slutty friends.

“It would look so.” The friend whispered back, “She’s with Noah; it has to be.” Tabitha looked at Noah, eyeing him up as he looked at Ruth in a way that could only be described as love. He knew what his heart wanted, he was 16. He had always loved her. He knew he always would. Right from then, that second, when she was walking shyly in that dark blue dress with ringlets in her hair, looking more beautiful than ever, he knew it would only ever be in love with her truly.

Ruth giggled shyly as she saw Noah smiling at her. She saw the way Tabitha at him, and the way Noah simply ignored her. Ruth felt nothing better when she saw him ignoring her.

“You know he only has eyes for the one girl who can’t fall in love?” Dana whispered to Tabitha. Tabitha frowned and stormed away to another group of girls. Ruth hugged Noah tight.

“Thanks for talking me into this glorified disco.” She giggled, hugging her bed friend tight. Noah hugged her back, never wanting to let his Ruth go.

“Not a problem.” He whispered, chuckling as the bass-heavy music kicked in. He took her hand. “Dance with me. This one night, just dance with me.” He whispered, requesting kindly.

“One night only.” Ruth agreed, following him to the dance floor, dancing slowly with the man she would one day marry, little did she know that was ten years ahead of her with so much more to come.
