chapter forty-five; real life

As we continue to walk down to the pool, my phone repeatedly goes off from texts from the boys.

"You gonna look at that?"

"Nope. It's just the boys."

"Oh." He smiles. "Let's get in."

He throws his jumper off before hopping in, water splashing on me.

"Reece!"

"Well maybe you should get in!"

I go to take my T-shirt off, but stop, suddenly feeling self conscious.

"You alright?"

"Yea! I'll get in the pool in a minute."

He raises an eyebrow before turning around and going under, so I take that as my chance to get in.

I jump in next to him, making him come up and laugh.

"What was the point of that?"

"The point of what?" I ask innocently.

"You know what."

"I don't know what you are talking about."

He smirks before picking me up and throwing me over his shoulders.

"Reece! Put me down!"

"Should I?"

"Yes! Don't throw me either."

Yet that's exactly what he does.

I'm engulfed in water and when I come up, Reece is laughing at me.

"Not funny."

"It is."

I stick my tongue out as I smooth my hair down.

"You do have to admit, it's funny to see you with mascara running down your face."

"I have mascara running down my face?!" I immediately splash some water on my face and begin scrubbing it off.

"You are making it worse."

I roll my eyes. "Water isn't the best makeup remover."

"Well it should be considering how easily it ruins makeup."

I laugh. "That's true."

"Here, let me help."

He swims over to me and starts to rub the mascara from under my eyes off of my face.

"I completely forgot I was even wearing makeup."

He chuckles. "It's okay. I don't mind."

I tilt my head up to look at him, but stop when I see that our faces are only centimeters apart.

"Uh, hi."

I look down from his eyes to his lips before slowly leaning in.

"We're here!"

Reece and I jump away from each other before looking at the two boys.

"What happened to you?" Blake asks, looking weirdly at the spots of black on my face.

"I forgot that I had makeup on."

"Well its all over your face."

"Oh really? I didn't notice."

"Sarcasm!" Reece shouts.

"Yes Reece, I was being sarcastic."

"Ha!"

Blake raises an eyebrow at us before shaking it off and throwing his towel down onto a chair.

George jumps in next to Reece and I, making me laugh.

"I am tanning." Blake says.

"You're such a girl." I say as he lays down.

"Am not."

"Oh really?"

"Yes, really."

"Then how come the only girl here is in the pool and you're not?"

He lifts his head up but doesn't say anything.

"Cat got your tongue?"

"Oh shut up."

"Don't tell her to shut up." Reece says.

"Defending your girlfriend?"

I freeze up.

"She's not my girlfriend."

I just stand awkwardly, wrapped up in my thoughts about what Blake said. I know he meant it as a joke, but it's weird hearing him say that.

"Don't listen to them." Reece whispers in my ear. "They're just trying to get a reaction."

"Well it worked." I mutter.

"It did?"

"Well, yes."

"Why?"

"You know my feelings for you, and hearing them say that just makes it awkward I guess."

"You know I feel the same way." He smiles. "One day. I promise."

"Oh?"

"What are you two whispering about?" George asks.

"Nothing you need to know." Reece says.

I swim towards the ladder and climb out, checking my phone, smiling when I see a text from Connor.

'Boys and I are getting drinks and we're wondering if you wanted to tag along? They actually miss you.'

I laugh at the last sentence before responding.

''Haha very funny. I'm not that bad. I'm coming btw tell those boys that I missed them like crazy.'

I turn off my phone before heading back to the pool.
