The last week of the term came quickly. Plays were held for parents, sports were performed and everyone was happy. "Hey Joan! Can you wait until next year?! It's going to be so fun!" Jennifer exclaimed, grabbing Joan's arm excitedly.
"I'm sure it will be," Joan replied, being careful not to give the impression that she would be staying or letting them know that she wasn't.
"We are all going to vote for you again at this meeting coming!" Joan widened her eyes in panic.
"Jenny, I'd prefer it if you didn't... uh... give someone else the chance, eh?"
"What's got into you? You've lost your monitor spark."
"I just don't think... it'd be appropriate. What with me taking my fifth year exams..." It was true that Joan would be taking exams whichever school she went to.
"Oh come on! You'll still have time to be a monitor!"
"Please, Jennifer. Don't vote for me. Vote for Elizabeth or something."
"But Joan! We all want you to be monitor!"
"Can you SHUT UP about being a monitor?!"
Jennifer looked startled. "Fine then. Be that way."
"Jenny, I'm sorry..." Her eyes filled with tears and one trickled down her cheek. "I'm not coming back after the summer."
